Can someone explain why:
(a) Quicktime is updated so often.
(b) The updates are generally huge (> 40MB)
(c) They all require a restart?
These are real questions; I'm not (just) trying to be bitchy.

@jon -
if i had to guess...
a) its the core of so many apple products, the iphone, itunes, iphoto, etc
b) im sure they are having to patch a lot of legacy code, and again, because there are so many components involved, im sure its more than just a 'quicktime' update, it probably improves upon all the other programs that use it
c) same as above, it such a core product that restarting is the only way to make sure that it is launched properly in all appropriate places.
these are all assumptions, but only an apple dev could give the real answer

@tim: Someone else posited that it's for the reasons you mentioned, plus that QT implements all the DRM software, which "needs" to evolve quickly. Thx for the info.

I updated to Quicktime 7.4.1 now many programs no longer work. Anyone know how I can fix this? Or uninstall Quicktime 7.4.1? Eudora, IE, Fetch, MS Office, Quicken -- all stopped working.

I just (1.5 hours ago) installed this update on my PB G4 12 and Intel Mini, both on Leopard. No probs with the PB but the Mini just hung after I clicked restart. For over an hour I just had my desktop, no menu bar or icons, and an arrow mouse cursor. I finally figured I'd restart as something was amiss (the PB G4 took

I was hoping that this would fix the problem with viewing mp4 files in QT, but no luck!

Why do you want to use QT for that? VLC and MPlayer both handle mp4s. I use QT as little as I can get away with.

i rebooted and it took me to the welcome page as though i was booting for the first time and registering. the new update can not come any sooner, the version of Leopard is very buggy, i had to boot off another drive and i am backing up my backup. then i have to see what happens when i register.

Anyone else have login problems after applying the QT upgrade? I entered my password three times and got shaken off each time. I was then shown the password hint and I very carefully entered my password again, and it took. I use my password 10s of times daily to get at stuff in keychain and I never mistype it. Seems weird that a QT upgrade could cause this.
I also noticed that, after relaunch, SpamSeive behaved as if I'd only just downloaded it. I got the OS prompt asking if I really wanted to run a program downloaded from the internet.

Does anyone know if this Quicktime update breaks the Constant Bit Rate importing with iTunes again? Given the last update fixed it I am nervous about installing another.

I'm pretty sure I've lost my Safari plugins (adblock and Inquisition) since this update.
Unable to install them again as well.

I hoped it would fix the front row subtitle issue but no luck. Playing movies with external SRT subtitles in front row (using Perian 1.0 or 1.1) does not work. Hopefully OS X 10.5.2 brings a solution, as it makes front row completely useless for me now.

I just want to know when the gamma shift issue with Core Image/Video will be fixed. It is extremely annoying to have h264 files continuously show up lighter and less saturated than their original.
Even more annoying is that if I increase/decrease the volume or brightness and that little bezel comes up over the video, it briefly looks like normal until the bezel disappears again.
