Are we going to see new Cinema displays by t
he end of the month? If so, they might look like this-- it's a nice-looking mockup posted by Ben
over on the redrant forums. It is interesting that Cinema displays are almost starting to match up to the Beatles as the one thing we hope to get from Apple but never do. For years now, people have been hoping for an update to these things--
an installed iSight (that one's actually
been "a lock" for years) and
even a touchscreen display. But Apple hasn't budged-- the last time they updated the Cinemas, it was
to drop the prices two years ago.
Yup, it's been since then that a Cinema update has seemed to be just around the corner. You can only think of so many ways to update monitors, but it seems that Apple hasn't, so far, liked any of the ideas enough to put them on sale.
Thanks, Jacob!

Has anyone noticed that the ACD packaging has changed to reflect a Leopard desktop rather than a Tiger desktop?

I just hope they're not glossy. I can't stand the reflections on my wife's MacBook. The existing cinema displays are perfect for my workflow. I hope they don't screw them up.

They won't do that. These are for professional users.

if there's anyone out there who'd let this stand next to their Mac Pro...oh boy :(
just leave the displays like they are, add little iSight like MBP has and update them inside and on the price tag...

Nope... I'm happy with my 30" but if they do drop new ones... I think im seeing another 30 in my future

Nice design, though an obvious update to iMac styling. I'd buy one, assuming, of course that Apple also adjusts prices so that their monitors aren't twice that of other manufacturers for the same size.
Apple's historically high prices on monitors are the one remaining area in which they're not competitive with the rest of the market.

That is true when you measure size and resolution, but that isn't true when you look at teh other aspects of the monitor. Dell has much lower priced 30" monitors with a faster refresh rate. That is good for gaming but not as good as ACDs for graphics work. If your job (or hobby) depends on the quality of manipulating graphics then ACDs are the way to go.
Michael Long said 7:57PM on 2-11-2008
That may have been true back in the heyday of the "cinema" displays, but today there are plenty of LCDs with better specs in terms of brightness, contrast ratios, color accuracy, and refresh rates.
Bender Bending Rodriguez said 9:27PM on 2-11-2008
That is my point. Faster refresh rates mean a lowered viewing angels and less colour accuracy. This is what Dell has been offering at a much lower price than the comparable ACD.
I recommend the Dell monitors to anyone who doesn't do any sort of moderate to high-end graphic design. And if you a gamer a monitor with the highest refresh rate is the best choice here, not the ACD.
These are getting better every year, but still can't have the best colour accuracy and greatest viewing angle and still expect it to have the best refresh rate... at least not with the current technology.

Touchscreen would very foolish on the ACDs. iSights that are at least 1.3MP and IR sensors seem pretty obvious.

I actually miss the chin of the iMac a bit, the logo looks tacked on.

Umm, why would Apple put a "fat" border around the LCD. Everyone B****D and Moaned about the olds ones because if you ran two displays there was a couple inch gap. If anything you'd think they'd use an even thinner bezel.
And aside from price - especially on the 20 and 24 - do they really need updating? An isight? I dunno if they would really do that in something aimed at pro's. Perhaps they could increase the contrast or luminance or better colors, but I think they look pretty darn good as is personally. I mean they could always be more high end, but then again if you want ultra high end you'd prob go to the best LCD makers anyways. Maybe I'm the only one who is not feeling the need for an update though.

Agreed Alex. I really dislike the fat black border around the iMac screen and would not welcome it in the ACD either.
To be honest I think that single aspect mars the look of the iMac. They are, in my opinion, starting to look a little more like HP and Dell design with the silver and black.
I do get that Apple felt they had to move away from so many of their products being white, but aluminum and white (like the new keyboards) would have looked so sharp on the new iMac. I imagined a new iMac with a nice aluminium frame with a white Apple logo, white back (that said iMac. I loved that) and aluminum and white keyboard.
I just don't feel the love for aluminum and black look (iPhone, iPod Touch, new iMac, ugly black keys on the MB Air) and fear that the new ACD will go in the same direction.
Mind you the new iMacs are actually thinner than the same sized ACD and the iMac has a whole machine inside. They must be doing something with the thickness of the ACD.
Ah well, to each there own I suppose.

Wouldn't you think they would do it in a smaller black aluminum surround?

I think they are holding out on perfecting led backlighting. Any thoughts?

I actually really like this design. I think it's where Apple's headed. And remember, the ACD's aren't pro only. Lots of people buy them for their mini's and such. So Apple would probably try to appeal to both spectrums. I would hope Apple would do something similar to this.
