Let's just say it: Aperture 2 is here - and boy are some of us here at TUAW excited. Amongst the news, the full-price of the application has dropped to just $199 US, with the paid upgrade being just $99. That's down from the previous full price of $299 -- a price currently retained by competitor Adobe Lightroom (we'll see how long that lasts).New features include:
- Quick Preview mode -- 'for rapid-fire photo browsing'
- re-engineered database for the application to allow Quick Preview touted to be snappy even with half-million-image libraries.
- an all-in-one heads-up panel for Library, Adjustment and Meta-data controls.
- a selection of new tools: Recovery for blown highlights, Vignette & Devignette, Definition , Vibrancy and Repair and Retouch
- .Mac Web Gallery integration
- and 'All Projects' view, not dissimilar to iPhoto '08's 'Events' view
- improved RAW decoding
Thanks to all those who sent this in!

" The new version is available to buy in the US online store now, and undoubtedly heading to other international online stores soon, though the Aperture site has yet to be updated to reflect the changes."
Also available at Authorized Dealers everywhere. Why do so many sites always seem to favour the Apple Store at the expense of dealers? As if Apple's unfair trade practises such as unfair product allocations don't hurt us enough as it is.

It's obvious that Apple has not prepared well on this release. I even received an Aperture 1.5 serial number when I tried to download and get an Aperture 2 serial number.

Hmmm...
I guess it's time to break out Pacifist again and see just how slow this version will run on my iBook, especially since the system requirements state it won't run on anything less than a Dual 2.0 GHz G5... (Aperture 1.5 isn't SUPPOSED to run on my iBook, but with a little Installer Package hackery, it worked fine, although it always had a nasty "memory leak" (AKA after an hour or two open, it would be using 700MB of my gig of RAM, which is probably entirely normal...))
EDIT: After seeing the Tech Specs page, it turns out it'll run fine on a 15-inch PB G4 with a 1.25GHz or faster G4, so it should run on my iBook 1.33GHz, although the Radeon 9550 isn't specifically mentioned as supported (probably because they figure anyone wanting to run Aperture on an iBook is insane...)

I ordered Aperture on my new Mac Pro (shipped and arriving on friday).
So what version will I receive? Also---what about this price drop. I don't think that's reflected in my order either. When I check on my order details it just says Aperture.

oh interesting. Store for Education doesn't have price for Aperture yet. When I try to configure new Mac Pro there is not option to have Aperture pre-installed. (in store for Education). Just behind?

Aperture 2 is on the U.S. education store in the "Apple Software" section. For some reason they raised the price on that to $180 from the $150. Lightroom EDU is only $99.

That's because Apple recently revised their individual education discount on software to fall in-line with the hardware accessory discount of 10%. They had a huge number of people using/abusing the individual educational pricing policy. (I saw it all the time at my local Apple Store.)
The institutional discount is still very steep, so that current students, faculty and staff can purchase the software from their institution at a much deeper discount.

True, though they could do what Adobe does to curb that, which is require you to send them a .jpg or the like of your student ID. Not everyone's school store has any or all of Apple's products. Mine just has iMac's, MacBook's, and iPod nano's

Clicking the "Buy Now" link on the Aperture software page, or the Aperture featured item in the US Higher Ed store results in:
"Sorry... The item you have selected is currently not available from the Apple Store.
Please note that Apple cannot guarantee availability of any product."

Anyone got a running trial of it yet?
It's a much needed improvement to the UI. In 1.0 there was just too much going on at once.
Here's the features list: http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/100.html

So I tried to install the trial version, and got an error telling me I have to have Mac OS 10.5.2.
So look forward to a new update to OS X today as well.
