Apple TV Take 2 now available

We have received several reports from readers that the delayed update to Apple TV is now available. Apple TV Take 2, as Steve referred to it in his keynote, features an updated UI as well as:
- HD/Standard Def movie rentals
- the ability to purchase items from the iTunes Store directly from the Apple TV
- Flickr/.Mac photo browsing
- Browse the iTunes Podcast directory from the Apple TV
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

The software took about 4 minutes to download on my cable Internet connection over an Airport Extreme network. The install took about 15 minutes, with multiple system restarts. At the end of install you get a brand new welcome graphic, followed by the new menu we saw at the Keynote.

So are the updated AppleTV's available @ Apple retail stores now too?

Why does that matter? If you don't have the ability to download the firmware and update the box yourself you must not have an internet connection at home. And if that is true... the box really has no use.

Like Blair said (#12 below at this writing) I was waiting in case Apple snuck in a hardware update...

ya know up until the next update front row on the computers used to look exactly the same on apple tv. Do you think they'll update the look of front row?

My guess is no:
1. they want to differentiate;
2. I've always thought the previous appleTV software was a makeshift thing, while they were building something better based on Leopard. So probably the appleTV software was based on the then unreleased FrontRow 2 interface.

I'm hoping they update it, but I'm not holding my breath. Mentalsticks' first point is quite valid.

still very little new content - they only added like 27 new titles : (

Can someone post which movies are available in HD? I'm at work and won't be able to play around with it until tonight.

Because you were planning on renting and watching more than 27 movies in the next 24 hours? ;)

so... did they fix the 4Gb file size playback limit? I want to start to transcoding my HD library, but the 4Gb limit was really causing headaches.

Bah. It would come out while I'm stuck at school cranking out a paper. I want to go play.

Great- will update tonight!
I hope this gets the AppleTV 'modders' going, I'm interested to see what people can do with it.

All I want is a AppleTV browser or extension that can play the videos available on ABC/NBC

I just installed the update. Two new findings; the new welcome graphic uses 5.1 audio and Apple TV now supports AirTunes (just as a AirPort Express) - meaning it is now possible to stream audio from iTunes to Apple TV via remote speakers.
