iTunes 7.6.1 is out

Update-addicts listen up: it's that time again, as iTunes 7.6.1 has hit Software Update. For a change, the release notes take up a good few paragraphs (at least on first inspection). Skipping the Apple TV marketing spiel, however, the release notes for this update amount to "several bug fixes and improve[d] compatibility with Apple TV software version 2.0." -- music to your ears if you've been experiencing issues.

The 44MB update for Apple's ubiquitous jukebox is available now through Software Update, and presumably Apple's Download pages momentarily.

Thanks to all those who sent this in!

Sorry for the triple post. But it looks like Apple has NOT properly updated the US and Canadian websites.

If you download iTunes from the US or Canadian website, you do get iTunes 7.6.1 despite what the website says.

On the Apple Canada website, you are ONLY offered iTunes 7.5. (I guess Apple sees no reason for Canadians to upgrade to 7.6 since we can't rent movies, buy iPhones etc).

If you are looking for iTunes 7.5, go to the Canadian Apple site.

See http://www.apple.com/ca/itunes/download/

Just stick with iTunes 7.5. You only really need 7.6 or 7.6.1 if you want to rent those crappy and very expensive movies from the iTunes store (assuming you live in a country where you can even rent iTunes movies).

7.5 is stable and just works for the vast majority of people.

IMHO, iTunes is becoming more of a joke these days. You you noticed that EVERY time Apple tries to implement a new BRM scheme, a lot of things break. DRM sucks.

Don't drink the Apple cool-aid. It is time to look at alternatives like SongBird.

This update is really pissing me off. My iPhone now "times out" when syncing. The Phone thinks its done syncing when iTunes is still trying to push pictures to it. It has gotten so bad, that I'm now forced to 'force quit' iTunes so I don't risk dammaging my iPhone.

Looks like 7.6.2 is just around the corner.

Vista user here... I'll duck to avoid the fruit being thrown. there's a huge bug in the PC version of iTunes that makes the window come up completely black and unusable. I've posted messages in the Apple support forums about this, and the latest version of iTunes doesn't fix the problem. anyone seen this or know someone who has? I've tried the "compatibility" fixes, and minimizing/restoring/resizing, with no luck. I'm not running 64 bit either.

It has been happening on the Mac for a while too, but it comes up white. Clicking on the iTunes icon in the Dock solves it on the Mac. Maybe clicking on the Taskbar button will help you?

solved! here's the explanation, and it has to do with "dumbing down" vista just for the iTunes app:

I'm not sure how this might affect apple installations (and I was an apple user for years and never had a problem) but perhaps this might shed some light somewhere.

I upgraded to the new iTunes today and now iTunes won't open. I just got my first iPod and now I can't use it. Apparently this is a problem for many people, yet Apple denies knowing anything about this issue. I hope Mac journals take special notice of this issue.

I don't store my music in the default location, I store them on a network drive. EVERYTIME I upgrade iTunes, my settings are erased and the default storage location is reset. When will Apple address this simple thing so I can upgrade w/o worrying about my settings being erased every time?

For that to work, you need to do two things:

1. Make sure the iTunes Library files themselves are stored locally.

2. Make sure the volume is mounted before you start iTunes, otherwise it'll *temporarily* reset the location back to ~/Music/iTunes Music

I've been using iTunes from a network share for years with no issues.
