Signal 1.1 adds AirTunes support, landscape mode, Webclip icon

We covered Signal when it first dropped in the middle of last year, and now Alloysoft has sent us a note that they've upgraded to version 1.1. The app turns your iPhone into an iTunes remote through a server connection, so you don't need to jailbreak or hack the phone at all -- just run the program on your Mac, and you can use your iPhone as a replacement for the Apple Remote. And Signal actually works in Windows as well, so you can use it to control WMP, or even use a Windows Mobile device as a control instead. No idea why you'd torment yourself with Windows Media, but that's your row to hoe.

Version 1.1 brings control for AirTunes, so now you can switch speakers directly from the iPhone, and there's a host of new features -- Webclip support, an Alphabetic library, and Landscape support. Nice little program that's available as a free demo or as a registered version for $24.95.

So, for those of you that use Remote Buddy, can you use it to control a song playing in iTunes both on the Mac, as well as at an AirTunes station? Or Multiple AirTunes stations? I'm looking for an easy & cheap way to get one song playing in multiple rooms, and that seems like the way to go if it works.

Are there any competitors to the AirPort Express that do the same thing?

Remote Buddy is trying to do a lot more (remote control your whole mac); so the UI on the Touch is more cluttered to me. Also, Signal let's me choose multiple Airport Expresses while Remote Buddy only let me switch from one AE to another. Huge to me.

Audio Engine makes a wireless device that works with USB or normal AV Headphone Audio cables. I saw it in action at MacWorld. Very nice system. It is made to work with their speakers, but it would work with any system system that would work with AirPort Express.

Not sure I'd use this as is, although assuming it works with iPod touches I may try the demo... but if support for Roku's Soundbridge is ever included (I have three), it's a given.

"IPhone Remote" aka "telekinesis" with "Now Playing" Plugin can do the same sans the Airtunes and is freeware. (Donate!)

"No idea why you'd torment yourself with Windows Media, but that's your row to hoe." It might be because iTunes is sluggish in Windows - at least that's been my experience.

Signal is an excellent piece of software, and the recent update just makes it better. I've pulled out my sonos system and now use a Touch/Airport Express/Signal combo that's a better way to go for me.
