February is almost over, where is my Time Capsule?
The iPhone SDK isn't the only product that is supposed to be ready for the world by the end of this month (though it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer for our iPhone SDK): Time Capsule should be available by the end of this month as well.Time Capsule, you'll remember, is network attached storage (either 500 gig or 1TB) that is designed to work seamlessly with Time Machine. The idea is that you plunk one of these down on your network (or use it to create a wireless network) and then have all your Macs back up to it.
Many readers are asking us where the heck the Time Capsule is. Apple has a few more days before they miss their deadline, and if my order status is any indication those that ordered Time Capsules from Apple fairly soon after the announcement should see them ship on, or a tiny bit before, Feb. 29 (and they may pop up in Best Buy too).
I bet there are some people in Cupertino who are very glad 2008 is a leap year.

February 28 2008 at 7:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been thinking about getting a Time Capsule, as I'd really like to set it up as my main storage drive/media server. I was wondering, though, since a Time Capsule is basically an Airport Extreme base station with a hard drive, can it be added to an existing, non-airport wireless network?
Would I still be able to use Time Capsule that way as advertised, as a networked drive? Or is that functionality only available when a Time Capsule is used with Airport Extreme routers?
i've been waiting till these ship and there's a review up before buying one. i'm really curious as to what type of drive it has in it as well.

If you hack it, you can enable the external USB port and attach an external Hard Disk. Format the drive as HFS+ and Bingo!! You can backup via wifi to this USB drive attached to your AppleTV. (And you can still use your AppleTV as a AppleTV).
IMHO, if you have a AppleTV, there is no need to buy a Time Capsule.
The AppleTV is VERY powerful. You couldd even put OS X on it and use it as a $229 Mac.
But hacking the AppleTV will likely void your warranty. (See www.awkwardtv.org). And if you decide to install OS X on it, you will likely be infringing Apple's copyright as well.
You won't be infringing their copyright, but you probably would be violating the terms of the OS X license agreement.

February 27 2008 at 4:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor those of you looking to order one, I ordered a 1TB last week from Apple.com and it, too, has been prepared for shipment.
They probably aren't going to be backordered.
What about enabling Time Machine over WiFi for those of us who already have a perfectly good Airport base station and external hard drive?
February 27 2008 at 4:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy sentiments EXACTLY! I feel way cheated on that, that was the whole reason I bought an Airport in the first place. Apple needs to get on the ball with this, very annoying.
