Dave Shea's new iPhone/iPod touch theme
Web designers and enthusiasts are likely already familiar with Dave Shea, the Canadian web designer behind the css Zen Garden and other standards-based web projects. If you're not familiar with him from that angle, you may recognize his Chalkwork series of icons which has just had a set of iPhone & iPod touch icons added to it.
While most of his work comes with a well-deserved price tag, this set is available free of charge. It contains 29 well-designed icons, including the default applications and some select third-party apps. The download includes a selection of Dock and Wallpaper images as well. You'll need a jailbroken iPhone/touch to use them and the set comes with instructions for manual and SummerBoard installations.
iPhone/iPod touch owners (and anyone else who wants to) can download the free icon set at mezzoblue.

Am I the only one that enjoys the iPhone's current natural look? I don't even wish to change third-party applications' icons.
I'm pretty sure the iPhone third-part application developers/jailbreak community know that the iPhone deserves good quality icons even if the app itself sucks... and I've trusted them so far. Apollo isn't really all that great, but it still has a beautiful icon. Seriously.

I'll agree that the majority of themes' icons really don't do anything to enhance productivity like the OEM ones do. And although I love Dave Shea's work, the icons on the Chalkwork set tend to eff with my color memory. It's like seeing a red milk carton with skim milk in it. Just not right.
My only requirement in customizing the iPhone's appearance is that I need the original iPod Touch dock background. The iPhone's dock background (which is also present on Touches that are upgraded) is just hideous. For icons, I generally only change them if there's a darker version with a similar color hue to the OEM icon. Gruber (I think) wrote about Apple's color choices on the OEM icons awhile back...the green items for phone-related apps, blue for information/data-related apps, etc. Makes sense. And I can't find a URL.

I'd imagine it'd be hard to get the dock background to reflect with the corresponding icons in the dock, that's why they changed the dock in the new iPod touches.
But yeah, I agree... the iPhone's dock is hideous. I really want the iPod touch's dock.

What I hate about themes is that there isn't an icon for EVERY app out there (which this one doesn't). So if a new app is released, more than likely, there won't be a themed icon for it. I like to be uniform, it's a pet peeve.
Otherwise, great looking theme.

Well, you could always make your own icons for every conceivable application that has or has not yet been created. Let me know how that goes.
punkassjim said 7:26PM on 2-28-2008
Yeah, I make my own icons whenever a theme doesn't cover all my bases. It worked like a charm...up until I realized I couldn't customize the icons of any of my WebClips :banghead:
Reluttr said 9:30PM on 2-28-2008
You can customize the webclip icons, go into var/mobile/Library/WebClips and then there is the webclip folders, just go into the one you want to change "just look in Info.plist to see if its the right webclip" and you will find the icon.png, now just change that to the desired icon :P
x999x said 7:26PM on 2-28-2008
Lol, very unimpressive compared to his other works.
Theres a number of themes available to the community done by amateurs that bring much more creativity to the fold.

Sorry to double post, theres no edit button.
@Punkassjim:
Yes you can, just not through customize. Browse to /var/mobile/Library/Webclips and open any of the long named folders in there, you'll find icons in each. Swap them out with whatever you'd like and bingo, you've got custom webclip icons too ;)

that'll work for a permanent fix, but switching those types of things manually gets annoying if you want to switch themes any more often than once a year.

so, what are the chances that we'll be able to use these on standard iphones once the SDK comes out? if we're able to change these in a settings panel, will these be made available again?

punkassjim said 8:13PM on 2-28-2008
the assumption is that, once the SDK is released, most of us will still desire a jailbroken phone. We've gotten kinda spoiled with the preponderance of choice.
ZeroCorpse said 10:56PM on 2-28-2008
Yeah! It is SO worth it to spend a few hours jailbreaking, possibly voiding your warranty, and running untested, possibly unsafe software so you can change your icons.
So far, jailbreaking has shown me nothing compelling. I think some people do it just because its something to do.

Zero,
read up...and it takes less than 3 minutes to jailbreak, unlock and activate now...also, if you jailbreak it you can use an at&t account w/o doing the two year contract...yeah you're right, nothing compelling...

For who doesn't have this working right away,
and hasn't installed the SummerBoard fix from Installer.app,
this might be a quick heads-up

Like it, put it only seems to work on iPhones(/iPods Touch?) that are set to english language. Localized (german in this case) iPhones don't display all of the icons...
