Engadget unboxes a Time Capsule

My Time Capsule is sitting somewhere in China at the moment, but our friends over at Engadget managed to get their hands on one, and they have even posted some unboxing pictures. They note that the device itself is a little larger than you might think it is based on looking at the pictures on Apple.com. I'm sure they will post more once they put the Time Capsule through the paces.

I'll certainly be posting my first impressions once I get my Time Capsule up and running.

the TUAW crew needs to hit the mail room sooner than the engadget guys... they're stealing YOUR headlines!!!!

Bribing the night security guard for a spare key, hiding overnight in the mail room also helps to make sure you get the scoop before engadget.

Can you run Bonjour Browser and capture the service detail that Time Capsule is broadcasting? That will tell us what message needs to be advertised via Bonjour to have other AFP servers look like Time Capsule. I am wondering if it is the adisk (Automatic Disk Discovery) serivce registered to Apple.

Continual backups across a wireless LAN - I guess TimeCapsule makes sense if you don't do much with your computer, or your wLAN.

Just don't come crying to me when your porn video downloads start taking days instead of hours.

I don't think that's how Time Machine works... It backs up everything when you first set it up, then it makes note of changes and backs up those changes every hour, not as they happen. If this still cuts too large of a slice out of your wireless pornwidth, there are hidden settings to change the backup interval.

Anyone knows if it is possible to connect the Time Capsule to a DVD player (with USB port)?

I would like to download some videos, keep them on the Time Capsule and then watch them on TV.

Thank you.

I would love to know the results of:
sudo nmap -O --osscan-guess TCIPADDRESS
(install nmap first of course)

If the answer is MacOSX, then I'm guessing that any Airport Extreme owner hoping for a working AFS server is doomed. The Extreme runs NetBSD.

Ive been calling all day. Which store did you call? The Bay Street one (in California) doesn't have it yet.

Anyone know if Apple is delaying supply to third party vendors..? I've had one on order from Amazon for weeks and they still have no estimated ship date.
I think I should just cancel it and walk into the Apple store a few miles up the road and pick one up.

It is really cheap! I am slightly miffed by having just purchased the AEBS just a few months ago and a new 500Gig hard drive. I paid over $280 (for the student discount). I hope that Apple turns on the ability to do Time Machine backups via AEBL now that the Time Capsule is released.

I have a sneaky feeling that Apple's manufacturing plants are somewhere several kilometres away from where I am living at.

Re: it's a lot bigger, blah, blah.

Does this mean I was the only geek around who went to Apple's website when this critter was announced and looked up the dimensions to see if it fits easily into the spot reserved for a router on my crowded desk?

And folks wonder why I question the technical acumen of Engadget and TUAW.

I saw a few in person at Macworld, so I won't be surprised with how big it is. :) And of course you can just look at the tech specs.

Wow, it's a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Almost too big.
