Time Capsule vs. Airport Extreme

I'm a little Time Capsule obsessed, it is true (mine is in the Philippines at the moment. Soon it will be in Philadelphia and I will be a happy boy). Joe Kohlmann sent us along his pictures of his newly arrived Time Capsule sitting next to, and underneath, his Airport Extreme. If you have trouble imagining dimensions (the Time Capsule's dimensions are well known) these pictures will give you a good idea of what you should expect from Time Capsule.

Is there a guide somewhere of how to make the APE's USB hard drive work with time machine? All I have been able to find is some people saying you can, some say you can't but nobody is saying how or why.
If it doesn't work that is crap. I already own a 500gb hard drive, I don't need to buy one from Apple.

Actually, it sounds like you -do- need to buy one from Apple.

you can, sure, and there are instructions like this, but its unsupported for a reason. it doesn't work.
and before you jump on the bandwagon of "zomg apple isn't enabling it to force people to buy time capsules", well, just don't. that's ridiculous.

arg, lost the link. the instructions are (among other places) here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/10/how-to-enable-time-machine-on-unsupported-volumes/

I'd be cautious about doing it though. I've heard reports that using this technique causes _all_ of your backups to be erased when the drive fills up. If that's true, it's almost certainly not worth trying.

The TC looks about the same size as the ATV?

Boo … I wanted to stack mine under a Mac Mini. Now I know that’ll look silly. It’s going to have to be hidden away out of sight instead.

Wow, I didn't expect it to be that large actually...bur I can't afford one right now anyway...! And like so many others I bought an AP Extreme and a large HDD shortly before 10.5 arrived, just to learn that the TimeMachine feature had been removed...
Besides, I've never had that many problems with a single piece of Apple hardware as with the APE, that overpriced piece of garbage has been driving me nuts ever since I got it...so I probably wouldn't want to invest in TimeCapsule anyway...! :(

Wow, a lot bigger than I imagined!
And Joe, it's good to see that you locked your other web galleries!

The Time Capsule has the same footprint as the Apple TV, but it is about a quarter to half inch taller.

That thing looks huge! I mean, it makes sense, the Airport extreme size, plus a hard drive, but still -- wow.

don't be too sure about the "soon" part, my macbook pro was in shanghai for a couple of days before it actually shipped and then went by way of anchorage and then newark to finally arive in philly (nice to know that there are other philly mac users though)

I wish they would standardise the footprints of these things, a mac mini, AE, time capsule and Apple tV would look crazy all together.

If I am already are using Airport Extreme and a separate 500 GB hard drive in my home wi-fi, does this mean that I would have to replace both with Time Capsule just to have wireless backup with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro?
