MagStay PRO keeps your MagSafe stuck
The MagStay Pro is a little plastic clip that holds in your MagSafe power connector on a 15" or 17" MacBook Pro. Basically, it's a retainer that plugs into the USB port next to the MagSafe to keep it from being disconnected. It also allows you to store the little plastic cap that comes with the MagSafe power adapter. Obviously, this completely undermines the point of the MagSafe, but if you find it accidently coming out when using it on your lap, etc., and you're not worried about the cord tripping problem, then it might be worth a look.
The MagStay Pro is $11.99 and is available from thought out.

Twelve bucks to undermine your power port's safety, and to compromise the safety of your USB port.
Lovely.

I guess for some ripping out your usb port is not as tragic as ripping out your power port.

Or, more accurately, "I guess for some ripping out your usb port is not as tragic as having your power cord temporarily (but safely) becoming unplugged every once in a great while."

The look on your cat's face when the MacBook unexpectedly shoots across the den and crashes into the plasma TV: priceless.

wow, this may be the absolute worst idea ever.
- undermine the safety feature
- compromise the usb port's safety
- render the usb port useless
- lose $12
- accomplish something that could have been pulled off sufficiently with a rubber band, if you *really* wanted to
this is f'in GOLD man.

Interesting comments, and yes, a tough crowd. From a woman's point of view I can assure you that rubber bands and other ideas intended to jerry-rigg the magsafe in place have been tried and failed. I love the MagStay Pro. It's safe and perfect for my needs, and fellas, sitting "like a lady" on my own sofa after a hard day's work just doesn't happen!!

I love my MacBook, but there is no way in this lifetime I am going to put that notebook computer directly on my lap! Way way to hot. I can't imagine anyone wanting to do that.
I use a piece of wood (used to be a shelf of an old shelf unit I had) that has enough room for my notebook and a mouse pad. I even put a notebook fan between the notebook and wood. Even with a 3/4" thick piece of wood, the heat gets through.

I think you should take yours to an Apple store. Mine gets warm, but nowhere near how you described it.

Jack, I have yet to see a MacBook or MacBook Pro that doesn't get uncomfortably hot during normal use. Heck, even my Windows based Pentium 4 notebook gets pretty darn warm when sitting on my lap. Maybe your just a mutant. ;)

While I understand the hostility people seem to have toward this thing, it would actually be pretty useful in extended the life of your battery.
It's recommended that if your laptop is going to be sitting in one place for a while, keep it plugged in without the battery. Here at school, I would love to do that, but since the MagSafe could come out at anytime, I would never risk it. With this, I would feel a bit more confident.

The MagSafe feature would still work, guys. Right now, if you have a MacBook Pro, try yanking the cord straight out. It pulls out just fine. Only if you pull slowly does it drag the laptop with it. So unless you trip in slow-motion, this overpriced piece of plastic won't undermine the MagSafe. But it would solve the MagSafe's annoying tendency to come unplugged by pushing it up or down. As someone who uses his laptop alot on a bed or couch, I hate that the laptop sinks in and knocks the MagSafe right out.
This product is a great idea, just set at the wrong price.
