Filemaker releases Bento 1.0v2
Bento is the end user database software from Filemaker that was released as a beta a couple of months ago. We took a look at Bento in November. If you're coming from Filemaker Pro development, you'll find Bento a bit limiting, but the number of users who could potentially find it useful, like teachers, coaches and busy families, is large.Filemaker recently made version 1.0v2 available. Changes include
- Support for 5 additional languages
- Stability fixes

Let me just say that I am a FileMaker developer and I love it! However, I just don't get what I'd want to do with Bento. Not that I don't understand how it works, but it just seems like an unnecessary waste of resources. You can already do all the things it does with the Mac, so why not just use what is already there instead of adding another layer? I guess if other people find it useful, good for them.

I'll give one example of why I think Bento might be helpful for me. I work in sales, but also have projects related to developing new products with factories, product development specific to customers, etc. etc. Each project will involve a number of people, some people are common to several projects and some are included in only one project.
If I try to manage projects with only a combination of Mail, Address Book, and iCal I need to keep flipping between the three to sync the information. If I update notes in Address book for one contact of many involved in a project, then I won't see those notes when I'm talking to another contact without pasting notes in that contact, and I can have many contacts in a project.
I'll be getting Bento as soon as I upgrade to Leopard. This might be the "killer app" that pushes me over the edge. I've been needing this app for a long time...
