DST reminders for Mac users
If you're extra-drowsy this morning in the USA, you're not alone. The switch to Daylight Saving Time over the weekend, moved earlier last year, leaves us scratching our heads in sleepiness for a few days... although, according to a recently-published study, the DST-associated rise in automobile accidents may be mythical (still, please drive carefully!).The good news for anyone on Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or higher is that the 2007 DST changes are reflected automatically in software and should not require any special handling. There are a couple of things to keep in mind, though... first, if you use Entourage 2004 or 2008 and it's been running through the weekend, you'll need to quit it and relaunch before it recognizes the time change.
Second, remember that while your machine is patched and fully DST-aware, your colleagues or collaborators (particularly those overseas) may not have the US daylight rules completely sorted out. To avoid scheduling mixups, if you are planning events between 3/11/08 and 4/1/08, you may want to include the exact time and timezone of your meeting in email subjects or event names.
Thanks, Rich.

My Macbook was the one that broke the news to me that DST came three full weeks early this year. I knew it was early this year, but not this early!

I may be being a grump here, but huh? This is the *second* year that DST came early, so how is this news? Isn't this a little like talking Y2K bug on 1/1/01?

Well, honestly I forgot about it, so if my computers and cell phone hadn't set themselves, this post would have been helpful.

Yeah, why don't the leave the clocks alone? We have electric lights now. We don't need to provide more light in the evening for farmers and people on the streets.
This is an antiquated, stupid policy that needed to die in the mid-1900s.

"they", not "the"
I'm blaming this on the DST lag.

Actually, electric lights were in use when DST was first adopted in the US. Also, from my understanding, many farmers hate DST as it reduces the time they have to harvest a few crops in the morning and haul them over to the local markets (as they tend to wake at sunrise regardless of time).
The general ideas was that if you could reduce the use of artificial light in the evenings, that reduction would more than make up for the added use of artificial light in the morning resulting in a net energy savings.
But I really agree with you. DST should be done with. I can't imagine the energy savings are that effective anymore. (How many office and stores do you walk in and see artificial lights on regardless of daylight?)

I forgot all farmers have their fields surrounded by stadium lights now… moron.

Hmm, must be a slow news day so I'll bite.
Today I think any energy savings for DST is non-existent. It has been analyzed to death. I do, however, like DST and I think most people like having the extra sunlight at the end of the day. No, my job doesn't let me move hours as I wish so I'm not able to work 6-4 instead of 7-5 so DST is a boon for me.
I also think DST is supported by the blog cartel who draft stories about it twice a year and get massive views from the people who wish to espouse their "pro" or "anti" DST views. :)

When I said "providing more light for farmers" I certainly didn't mean providing artificial light, and I'm stunned that anyone would be dumb enough to think that.
I meant that we set the clocks back so there are more *apparent* hours of daylight. The sun "goes down an hour later", if you're a clock-watcher under DST.
Of course, there isn't "more" light, but changing the clock just makes it so that if you work a set schedule, it seems to you like the sun goes down later. It went down at 5:00 pm yesterday, but now the sun's going down at 6:00 pm (even though it's still really 5:00 pm and the only thing that's different is the clock itself.)
Stadium lights?!?! And you call ME a moron? I can't believe I had to explain this to you.

Entourage requires a relaunch just to recognize DST? And people trust this program with their schedules? :p

Ah...This time of year I love being in Arizona. We don't have to deal with all that stupid DST nonsense.
