If you happen to use Microsoft Office 2008 as your office suite of choice, Microsoft has an update for you. This security update, which brings the suite to version 12.0.1, features "several changes that improve security, stability, and performance" and includes "fixes for users of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard." Sync behavior in Entourage and a file corruption bug in PowerPoint are among the areas of improvement. The update also features "fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code." That's good because we don't want that, do we?
To download this new update, head on over to the Microsoft Mac Business Unit site and go to the Downloads section. For a full explanation of what this update does, check out the Microsoft support article.
As with any update, be sure to let us know what happens if you decide to apply it.

Umm, anyone notice that About Entourage still lists it as being the old version 12.0.0 ??? What's up with that ? About Excell seems ok at 12.0.1

Updating Office for MAC 2004 demonstrated the same thing - not all the elements show the updated version - as I asked when updating 2004 to 11.4. They indicated that as long as 1 element did, they were all updated. I suspect it just goes with the territory. Why make it simple and "universal"? Just MS being MS.

My updated Entourage is showing 12.0.1...I wonder whether your upgrade wasn't completely successful for some other reason -- file left open or something like that?

Argh.. this update completly messed up my office installation. In the end, i erased it and reinstalled it from scratch. I then rerun the updated and finally all my MS apps were updated..

Does that mean that when you updated Office 2008 all the elements showed the same "version"? It doesn't work that way in Office 2004. Maybe MS corrected it, or in fact, updated ALL the individual programs. We'll probably have to stay tuned to future updates. I haven't worked up the courage to update to 2008 as yet. I think I'll give it another week or three.

I have the same problem. It looks like the update to the updater (from 1.x to 2.1.1) didn't work (actually it installs AutoUpdate into my Trash). The old version of MS AutoUpdate doesn't see the Office2008 updates.

Nope. That's why I don't buy Microsoft software.

Now it makes sense about why Apple is so vague about updates...

Update went fine for me, downloaded it from MS website. I think it deleted my spotlight index though because after the install my CPU was still running like mad so I restarted. When everything loaded back up my CPU was still going nuts, I check spotlight and it says it is indexing my drive.

I too was told that there were no updates when I used the MS updater app. So after doing a manual download and attempted to install, I got an error message which I now can't remember what it said. Something about a script that shuts down any open Office applications before install. It ended up failing and kicking me out of the install.
The fix for me was to run the update a second time and then it worked and installed as it should.
Go figure.

Just read the release note. It seems this update does not fix the download problem with Safari. (Downloading a .doc, .xls or .ppt will result in a .dot, xlt or .pot template file)

The notification sound bug is still there. It worked for a few minutes, but then stopped again. Also, pre and post update I have a problem with Entourage behind a proxy. When I first open Entourage it sometimes gets stuck and won't allow me to enter in the proxy info. I have to force quit and reopen a few times before it will finally take the proxy info. After that, it works fine. Thoughts?

- It's still painfully slow.
- I still have the "not enough memory" message when I open 2-3 (small) Excel spreadsheets, even though I have got 2GB of ram and Activity Monitor tells me I have 500+ MB free.
- I still have issues with Exposé and Spaces.
I will therefore continue to use iWork, which I paid 59€ as a student...
