Ask TUAW: Mirrored RAID, sharing disks, iPhoto in Front Row, updating podcasts in iTunes and more
In this round of Ask TUAW we'll be looking at questions about setting up a software mirrored RAID with the Disk Utility, sharing volumes between Mac and Windows, forcing iTunes to update podcasts even if you haven't been listening, finding a missing iPhoto library in Front Row and much more.As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!

I am running Leopard with two 1 tb My Book Studios acting as a sort of RAID storing my music and movies. It's not a RAID since I thought I could not move the two drives to a mac mini I plan on buying as an HTPC. My question is, is there an Applescript or Automator command I can use to automatically copy items to drive 2 when I add the item to drive 1? Thanks, I'm new to Mac.
If I'm understanding you correctly you want the drives to mirror each other. This is easily done by setting up a software RAID with the Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Just go to the RAID tab, select the two volumes, and create a Mirrored RAID Set. You can check out the relevant Apple Support Document.

Is there a way to fake your operating system identifiers, information, etc. online? For example, Netflix's online viewing capabilities are only open to Windows users at the time, but could I make my computer pretend to be running Windows XP without actually running Windows XP? I don't even know if I would be able to play the videos once I get through, but it would be nice to have the ability to fake my OS for other things too.
Certain browsers, like Firefox, do allow to spoof the identifier. However, that won't fix your problem here. The Netflix streaming relies on Microsoft DRM. So even if you spoofed your OS identifier, it still would not be possible to play the streams on your Mac. If you have an Intel Mac your better bet is just to access Netflix in a virtual machine in Parallels or Fusion. On the bright side, Netflix streaming is coming to the Mac this year.

I have a few different iphoto libraries on my hard drive and on a firewire drive attached to my 12" powerbook g4 running 10.5.2. and i'd like to be able to access at least ONE or some of them through front row... Is there any way to do this using aliases or something? (it currently only show a "look for shared libraries" option when i get to photos in front row)
Front Row should automatically access your default iPhoto library. So make sure you have one of your libraries located at ~/Photos/iPhoto Library and it should be loaded automatically. If you already have your default library located there, there are a couple of other possible solutions outlined on this thread. It may be that some of your photos are blanks and the problem may be fixed by deleting them. The problem may also be with the AlbumData.xml file. Have a look at this Apple Support Doc and this website for some ideas.

My AppleTV has stopped appearing in iTunes and now I can no longer sync my music. It used to work fine and the AppleTV settings are properly set up in iTunes. How can I get it to show up?
Apple has a Support Document on this question with a variety of suggestions. It seems likely that this is a networking problem; are you sure you didn't change any of the network setup, either on the Apple TV, the Mac, or your router? I'd try going through Apple's suggestions one by one until your pinpoint the problem.

I subscribe to about a dozen or so podcasts and download them into iTunes. In most cases, I drag the podcast episode over to my iPod and listen to it from that. Periodically, iTunes will gray out the icon next to the podcast and tell me that it has stopped updating it because I haven't listened to it in a while and give me the option of clicking yes or no to update. Is there some way to turn that annoying "feature" off? I really don't care for iTunes to judge me unfairly as slacking off on my podcasts when I am simply not listening to them iTunes. Thanks.
I too find this particular "feature" of iTunes quite annoying. However, there is a shareware utility Cast Away ($7) which will allow you to work around this problem by automatically playing your podcasts (which is the only way to force iTunes to keep updating them).

I have a 500GB external G-Drive with both a USB and firewire connections. I would like to share the drive between my two computers. One is a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.2, the other is a Dell Desktop running Windows XP. I partitioned the drive into Macintosh and DOS partitions (250GB respectively) and I'd like to keep the drive connected to both computers at the same time (MBP with Firewire and Windows with USB) and access the two partitions at the same time. Is there a way to do this, or do I have to unplug one computer and plug in the other to switch back and forth? Any ideas?
No this is not possible. Only one interface can be active at a time. There is, I think, a relatively easy solution. Just mount both volumes on one of the computers and then share one or both of the volumes to the other with SAMBA (though keep in mind that the Mac can read the FAT32 partition; the Windows machine cannot read the HFS+ partition without extra software). You'll need to turn on Personal File Sharing (with SMB sharing in the options) in the Sharing Preference Pane.

I'm looking into the possibility of going paperless, scanning important receipts and then archiving. While I've heard of a few mumblings of good software options, I'm having a devil of a time locating resources for OSX compatible scanners. (reviews) These days it seems like most scanners are actually multi-function printers, and I can live with that; I just don't want to end up buying a turkey. Are there any resources out there for mac scanners/multi-function printers, and figuring out which ones come well recommended?
I'll make it simple and just tell you that I think you want a Fujitsu ScanSnap for this purpose. Unfortunately, they're rather expensive but pretty much everyone who has one loves it. As we've previously noted, the much cheaper NEAT Receipts Scanner is supposed to get Mac support sometime this year, but there's no hard information yet on that.

Has anyone else experienced "iphone fade"? My partner and I bought our iphones on the same day last fall. Today I noticed that his screen's colors are richer than mine. His webclips and "iphone menu blue" are a deeper color and his black is blacker. Is this fading due to usage, we have the same amount of call usage but my data usage exceeds his by six times, or is this a defect?
Another Time Capsule issue: slow printing to USB printer. I have a new TC with a Samsung ML-1630 (the shiny black laser that Apple is selling) attached to the USB port and it takes about 6 minutes to print one page. If I connect my Mac directly to the printer's USB cable, it prints almost instantly. The print dialog on my Leopard MacBook Pro spools the print job just as fast as ever, but the job sits in the queue forever, until it finally prints (CUPS on localhost:631 shows the very slow progress if I refresh while waiting). This happens when the Mac is attached to the TC wirelessly or directly using cat-5. TC is the router and backup and internet work just fine, as does sharing a USB drive attached to the TC USB port...
Others with this model printer have posted on the Apple support forums with similar problems, and Apple tech support kinda shrugged and said, "engh... it must be your printer" (though I didn't have this problem sharing this printer with an Airport Express (and they sold me this printer a few months ago - frustrating)).
Any tips on when new firmware might be forthcoming? If not soon, I rather spend my money on a Mini and have it work properly and work as an iTunes server in addition.
Is this just a case of Apple rushing this thing out and not testing thoroughly or is there something I can reset in the TC to try again?
Is there a way to drop link to multiple points in the Google maps application from a web page on an iPhone? Such as, all of the locations of your business in a city?

I was excited about the new ability to resize partitions so I reformatted the drive to Mac OS Journaled and created a partition. However, the plus and minus buttons for creating new partitions are greyed out. When I check in Disk Utility it says that both partitions are Mac OS Journaled but that the overall drive is still MS-DOS Fat. What did I do wrong and how can I get the whole drive to be Mac OS Journaled?

cause i have tried dozens of times changing the photos names, etc., but I can't figure how to tell mi iPod i want a certain picture to go first, a certain picture to go second...
please help!!
My 12" powerbook g4 (10.5.2) completely freezes anytime i try to run the DVD Player. What gives? It seems like the problem started after i updated to 10.5.2. I have a workaround using VLC but honestly, I shouldn't have to... right?
is my video card no longer supported or something? I looked around on the Apple Discussion boards and it seems I'm not alone...
Question for next time:
This is kind of a corollary to the scanner question that was answered this week. I'm looking for a business card scanner that is compatible with Leopard. I'd like to scan cards and then add the contact to Address Book. There are a few options - IrisCard, WorldCard from PenPower, BizCard Reader from NewSoft, and of course NeatReceipts (coming soon). The problem is that I can't find any recent reviews or comparisons and most of them don't mention anything about Leopard compatibility. Basically, I'd like to know what is the best business card scanning solution for Leopard.
Thanks.
Thanks for answering my question. Now, if I set up a RAID on my iMac can I move it to a Mac Mini with no problem later this year? Also, will the RAID Utility erase the data I have on the drives already (they're half full)? Thanks again.
March 15 2008 at 10:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo I'd love to get an answer to this question.
I've recently bought a new iMac (gotta love the Core2Duo after upgrading from a g5) and created an account for me, and one for my girlfriend.
I've got a large iTunes library (~45,000 mp3s) on an external disk and have successfully added them all to my library. I've configured both my iTunes and the iTunes on my girlfriend's account to point to the external drive, but here's the problem: When I add music to my library, it doesn't update hers and vice versa. I mean, it does copy the music to the music folder on the external however, it doesn't add it to the other user's library. How can I set it up so that when either of us add music to our own iTunes, it is reflected in the other's library?
I am not sure if this is a Mac related problem, but I seem to be having DNS issues lately. I have Road Runner and my browser (Firefox, although I have confirmed that Safari is acting the same way) seems to get stuck on "Looking Up" and "Transferring." This just started a few days ago and Time Warner says it is not a problem on their end. I have tried to flush the DNS cache, but nothing changed. I have heard that OpenDNS is a possible solution, but I have security concerns about using them. Even though that may be a viable solution, I am wondering why this has happened all of a sudden. I have a 20" iMac 2.16 GHz running Leopard if this helps at all. I have also confirmed that closing other programs that use an internet connection do not help in any way. Any solutions or suggestions?
March 14 2008 at 6:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply@Jim: Not sure this will help, but I had exactly the same symptoms recently, and the source was simple, although the troubleshooting was not so obvious. It was simply that I have a DSL connection and phone line filters were missing. All phones had one, obviously, but the power meter that automatically sends its data for billing was connected directly. So it would screw up my internet connection with the "Looking up" freezing, roughly once a month, for whatever duration until I reboot my router. Do you have any appliance or anything hidden in your walls that communicates in the background that was forgotten during your Road Runner/DSL system installation?
March 14 2008 at 7:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThanks for the reply Jonathan...nothing new to my setup over the last few days, which is when the problem began. I have had my Mac for about 6 months with no issues and the same setup. I have a cable modem that connects to a linksys router which connects directly to my Mac. All wired connections and in close proximity to each other. I tried resetting the modem and the router with no luck either. Thanks for your suggestion!
