iPod 5G gets an update to 1.3

If there's one thing you can be sure of in the software update department, it's that an otherwise nondescript iPod software update will include "bug fixes." In the case of the new 1.3 update for 5G and 5.5G iPods, that's about all we know so far. The update is available via iTunes but has not shown up yet on Apple's download pages.
I've just installed the update on my iPod and there aren't any visible changes to speak of. If you've got the update and you notice anything odd, please do speak up.
Thanks Oli!

This ipod looks so 1990's when comparing it to the ipod touch and the iphone. I gotta tell ya though. I own this ipod as well as the 8 Gig iphone.

I just gave a check and received an error(1453) that the iPod software update server couldn't be contacted. I'll check again later.

I hope I don't -- I on occasion get my iPod sleeping with it's eyes open... aka it sleeps but doesn't turn off the screen! And this is when it's been on for a month or so. A reboot fixes it for the next few months.

I've had problems with my 5G ever since the last upgrade. It will sometimes not play anything. It lets me select any audio but it just sits there not playing. If I let it set for 4-8hrs(never really timed it), it'll be fine when I get back to it. Other times the display has stayed on and not gone to sleep(blank screen) so my battery is run down very fast.
These things don't happen very often but I noticed them after the last update.

I updated my iPod last night and installed the new software... I haven't noticed anything unique... maybe some issues with video rentals?

From what I can tell, it will still update your iPod even with that error. It shows mine as 1.3 now.

In all likelihood, the update is intended to support new games or features, that may be coming out shortly.

I never understand what these "bugs" are that they're fixing.
The only bug I have is the audiobook one, which is that it stops completely after when it continues to a next chapter (doesn't always happen, just sometimes)
If this update fixes that, I'll post it here.

The nature of the bug dictates most users will never encounter it. If they do, I believe it becomes a "feature."
I've been getting a load of "unknown error (-48)" or something similar since the last iTunes update. Two restores haven't solved it. I would hope this bug is being addressed in this release.

I got that before -- I found a fix on the Apple support site that said (for some reason) change your system time to PST, then reset the iPod, then change it back to whatever it was before. I tried that and it worked.

Yay! I, for one, welcome all updates, be they useless or full of surprises.

I'm curious to know if it solves the problem I have with my Belkin TuneTalk recorder on my 5G iPod. It skips entire chunks of audio when recording, obviously making it completely useless, and after back and forths with Apple and Belkin, Belkin finally confirmed to me that it is not compatible with the 5G iPods, even though it says it is on the box.
The worst is that Belkin says I can return it for a refund, but I have to pay the shipping fees to return their defective product (I'm in Canada, so this includes customs/courier fees)! Perhaps this update will fix all that nonsense.

It added multitouch to the scroll wheel. So now I can zoom in on pictures and videos and pince and unpinch. It also added wi-fi.
Actually, I lied. It did nothing, but I am glad to see that there are still updates for the slightly older stuff. Most companies don't update their software and just wait until we get fed up and buy the newest version of crap they made.

True, I'm glad they realize Ipods are supposed to last a long time for each user, i don't plan on upgrading my 80g 5g till either it goes capoot or maybe when a 60g+ iTouch comes for only $200 =-D (one can dream)

That upgrade costs a few hundred bucks, but is currently available at your local Apple store.

Rentals work on the 5G iPod with 1.3 firmware. Try it!

Um, no they don't. At least not on my 5G.
