Safari 3.1 is available

In keeping with the 2008 tradition of Tuesday morning updates, Apple released Safari 3.1 today for both OS X and Windows -- marking the transition out of beta status for the Windows build. At 143MB (for the Leopard version, at least), there's a lot of changes, including
  • Improved JavaScript performance
  • Standards support, including CSS 3 web fonts, HTML 5 video and audio elements, and SVG advanced text
  • Developer benefits like editing CSS in the Web Inspector
  • Caps lock alert in password fields (Yay!)
There's much more, of course, and you can read the full change log here. Note that installation requires a restart. Apple's page describes Safari as "the world's fastest browser," but of course your mileage may vary.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

3.1 seems to have broken page up/down using the Fn-arrow key combo on my G4 PowerBook running Tiger. When it's broken, each page up/down moves two windows-full of text. The weird thing is, it seems to be broken only in looking at RSS feeds of a certain length or less. Currently, it appears that it's definitely happening where the screen is displaying about 1/10 of the total feed, but everything works if the screen/content ratio goes up to 1/15. Very strange indeed.

Anyone noticed that Apple has removed the ability to open previous and next page as tabs with the third button click?

I'm missing this feature badly. BTW the double click to open new tab is kinda neat.

Yup - somehow, the Safari (on Tiger, iBook G4) update has broken gmail; when I press the shift key whilst writing a message the input box loses focus and I have to use the mouse to get back to the box. Which is quite annoying.

Just tried the Acid test on various browsers.
Safari 3.1 - 76/100
Camino 1.6b3- 53/100
Firefox 2.0.0.12 - 52/100

Win for Safari 3.1

3.1 broke my arrow key scrolling in Google Reader. It seems to work everywhere else, though.

Concerning the Acid3 test; RealPlayer is getting a higher score than any other browser I have. 74 vs. 75.

I feel like a traitor saying this, but I just downloaded Firefox 3b4 and I'm lovin' it. It starts up quicker, loads pages quicker, and looks almost identical (maybe a little more cluttered) but I'm gonna stick with it until Safari bumps it up to match.

Ever since Safari 3 was released, I've gotten numerous random crashes. This new release didn't change that :'(

Can you run both 3 and 3.1 or is it upgrade only?

Thanks.
