1Password updated for Safari 3.1

Whenever a new browser version rolls out, the engineers responsible for plugins and enhancements turn on the espresso machines for the coming all-nighters as they rejigger their products for the latest and greatest. In the case of Safari 3.1, the wait for an updated 1Password version was quite short; the new build is downloadable today from Agile's site.

In addition to the compatibility fix in 2.5.12, there are a slew of new features and enhancements to the indispensable password manager for web forms; full list over here. My favorite ones: an option to replace an existing saved login, and a Leopard-standard integrated help system. Palm users will also see dramatic improvements to the 1Password features for the once-leading PDA platform.

New licenses of 1Password are $29.95 (not $39.95 as I said a second ago).

I got it for free in the most recent Heist, but didn't bother to install it until last week. I was a fool to have waited so long. It imported my existing chain from Firefox, and now that I've set up an identity I have it fill out forms with a couple of clicks. I expect it to make this part of recovery from a reinstall of OSX much easier, too.

I got this for free from a macworld thing I think... I used to use all the time, but when my free demo expired I stopped... not that I have it for free, I should try and run it again!

Naive (or dumb) question: what's wrong with the built in password manager?

I personally use KeepassX which is free and crossplatform with Linux/Windows since I'm on all 3 OSes but I'm trying to see the motivation for this?

1password is definitely cross platform (I believe) but on a mac it's simply better because you can reuse the same password when using FireFox, Camino or Safari. I for one use different browsers for different things and this is very handy. Also you can tell it to remember some specific forms which are not password-types but still used for login in on some sites.

I lived very well before using this but now it has
become a required part of "a working system" since it really saves me time daily, pretty much like QuickSilver.

I can't comment on other services though. I just now this one fits me. There are certainly better alternatives when you want to use multiple OS.

I used to think the price was a bit steep for that kind of tool but I am pretty glad I bought it (actually twice since it was in the MacHeist).

The update was released as soon as I updated to Safari 3.1. Props to the developers for being so responsive.

I concur. When I downloaded Safari 3.1 I immediately noticed that my 1Password button was MIA. I went to the blog and there was lots of chatter with the developers indicating that they were working on it. Within an hour, I noticed that update was available and, bingo, the button returned. A great piece of software with, obviously, some great people behind it.
