Rumor Time: Mac mini to get upgrade soon?

Just as many of you thought the Mac mini would die off in favor of a new class of consumer Macs, the rumor mill starts up again. AppleInsider is reporting that the Mac mini may receive an upgrade -- and fairly soon, too.

According to AppleInsider, the Mac mini may receive the following upgrades:
  • 45-nanometer Core 2 Duo mobile chips starting at 2.1Ghz
  • 800MHz front-side bus
  • Stepped-up Intel graphics processor (comparable to the one in the consumer MacBook)
AppleInsider remains speculative on a release date, but they're sure of the forthcoming upgrade. They go on to say that "Penryn-3M-based systems reportedly remained within the engineering build stage as of mid-month."

Has there been any new updates? Is this still on the rumor mill? Want to buy one, but will wait if it is happening soon.

The iMacs will probably be updated along with the Mac Mini again this year. My guess is we're still a couple of months away though.

Naturally, the day after I order a BTO Mini this rumor surfaces again. Here's hoping the new Mini's are released within 14 days. ;-)

As for my wishlist...

2.4Ghz Core2Duo
4Gb Ram option
iMac-like graphics card capabilities
802.11n
Firewire 800
500Gb HDD option

Funny how you guys show the Mac Mini with the remote since I bet that will not be included in the next revision.

I'd love blueray, but external would be fine. HDMI is fine, but all you need is different cables to get the same result from toslink and dvi. I'd love to see RAM, bus, processor, and graphics upgrades. Particularly, I want true 1080p support and eSATA port. I too feel like we've been waiting for this upgrade forever. I hope it is real and a big step up particularly on the graphics side.

They better not change the design; our 6 mac-mini renderfarm looks lovely, if they change it we'll have to re-wallpaper the studio when we double the farm...

i love the mini but i think they should scrap it for a "proper" tower of sorts

one that can accommodate 2 3.5" hdds, a proper gpu and higher speed core 2 cpus. add to this some sort of pci expansion and you'll double your mac sales. this will be great for all those who need to add machines to their studios and wish to keep their monitors without havin to splash out on a mac pro. esp if the machine would be used by a junior designer for example. also... apple could design it so that i can lay flat and look sleek on its side and fit in a home theatre set up. that pci slot will come in handy to offer built in dvr options.

maybe such a versatile machine might be tryin too hard but i find that what on the outset appear to be very limited macs such as the mini, apple tv and the iphone, are put to very interesting and versatile uses

With the iMac now only available as a glossy (which I personally don't care for at all) this might be a nice alternative, combined with a large Cinema Display.

Agreed, but only if they put a real video card in it instead of the Intel Integrated garbage. The 20" iMac has an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics processor with 128MB of memory. There's no reason why the mini shouldn't have that card as well, even if it's only available as a BTO option, or on the "Best" configuration.
