After a delay and then a pre-order period, Adobe has finally begun shipping Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac. This is good news for me, as my old copy of Elements 3 won't work on Leopard at all (I know, I'm a cheapskate). Some of the new goodies in version 6 include a new Quick Selection tool and tabs for quickly jumping between different functions. This version also makes it super easy to create photo books, greeting cards and more.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 runs on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (so PowerPC-users aren't left out in the cold). A single license will cost you $90US, though registered owners of older versions can upgrade for $70US with an in-box, mail-in rebate (or via adobe.com).

Anyone actually got a shipment confirmation? I saw their press release as well, but my order hasn't shipped yet.

I'll be interested in knowing if this program truly justifies the cost difference with Pixelmator/Acorn. I have Elements, but don't really make use of most of the features and have always found it to be inefficient, slow, and hard to learn. It doesn't help that I could never find a "For Dummies" or "Missing Manuals" book for the Mac version of Elements.

Personally, I bought the MacHeist bundle exclusively for Pixelmator. I can't imagine there's anything in Elements 6 that (for me) would justify more than twice the cost. Pixelmator is pretty nice and provides more than enough functionality for me.

Hmm... Elements 3 works fine on Leopard on my MBP 2.2... But I have 6 on order cuz 3 is really slow in Rosetta.

I'd love to see a TUAW review/comparison of Elements 6 vs. iPhoto '08.
For that matter, it would be great to see where Elements 6 leaves off and Lightroom picks up. I'm sure there is a little overlap, but I'd like to see what features each has that the other lacks.

Umm ... PowerPC Macs can run Leopard, too.

Exactly what I was going to say...Just because you run Leopard doesn't mean your automatically running an Intel based machine...Get your facts right TUAW

What's your source on this shipping news? I just got off the phone with Adobe and they said it's not shipping yet. Customer service rep guessed it would ship later this week or early April but he said he wasn't sure.

I'm deciding whether to upgrade Photoshop Elements 4.0 to 6.0 or just buy Pixelmator. Photoshop does seem to have more features (like that swipe the kid looking the wrong way and replace him with one facing frontward, on their web site) but previous versions have seemed pretty un-mac-like.
Pixelmator looks nice and probably has the feature set I'd need, and is cheaper. But for $20 more is Photoshop El worth it?

The Wacom Bamboo tablet comes bundled with Elements. I plan on waiting until they update the bundle. Costs almost the same as Elements and you get a tablet.

Too little Too Late!!
Adobe you dropped the ball. You could have released Adobe Elements much sooner but you didn't. Instead, you focused on the expensive PhotoShop for the Pro Market. Maybe you were hopping consumers would give up, throw up their hands and would end up buying it.
As a result, competitors have popped up like Pixelmator and Acorn. Pity. You once owned this consumer market.

Anyone know if the upgrade for mac is downloadable? Adobe's website seems to indicate the upgrade is only for the boxed/shipped version.
quote:
"Product Information
This upgrade version is currently available only for Macintosh, in English, and as a shipped box product."
Has anyone purchased the upgrade for mac and downloaded it?
Or is only available in the "dead tree" (boxed) version?
Thanks,
Rich

I am new to Mac and am no computer expert. Bought the iMac Dec 2007, bought and downloaded the Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. Haven't been able to successfully install. Adobe support has had me try to install as a new user and as the root user. Neither worked. Hope you guys have better luck than me.

UPDATE! After downloading it the 5th time, at least 70 minutes each time, it finally installed. I guess it was being corrupted during the downloading process. I read, only after I bought the download version, that Adobe often has download issues and that one should be advised buy their programs on cds.
