I know many TUAW readers keep their Macs on, and awake, over night for a variety of reasons. If your Mac is in your bedroom, then you have probably been rudely awoken by an errant alert from your Mac. Your sleepless nights are now over, because SoundAsleep is here to guard your slumber.
SoundAsleep is a very simple app that sits in your menubar (above you see SoundAsleep's preferences). Simply set the time you want to start muting your Mac, and when you want to unmute it. That's it. SoundAsleep will take care of it.
It would be nice if you could set a number of different 'muting schedules,' but that's why the concept of a version 2.0 was invented.
SoundAsleep is freeware produced by Nullriver.

I dunno...maybe it's just me.
But wouldn't simply turning the volume down before hittin' the sack have achieved the same result? Without having to install yet another app?

yes... but these days it's all about automation and eliminating repetitive steps.
I have a hackintosh hooked up to an LCD TV in my bedroom I use as a FrontRow media center... I could see this app being useful.

I have had this functionality for a pretty long time using cron and osascript.

Nice utility - my computer is in the room next to the bedroom, and I don't know how many nights I've gotten into bed, just about asleep, and then hearing the sound of one of my Adium contacts disconnecting or connecting (and realizing that I've forgotten to sign out of Adium before going to bed). This'll be handy.

You could also use "apple script" and iCal.
set volume 0
Copy it into the script editor.
Save it some where.
Make a new iCal event and set this script to run as the alarm. Make the event repeat daily.

Sorry, I forgot.
Change the number (0) in the apple script to change the volume level.
3 for about 30%
4 for about 40%...
Just make two different events, one for the morning (turn the volume up) and one for at night (turn the volume off).

Marco Polo ( http://www.symonds.id.au/marcopolo/ ) does it better, does much much more and allows multiple schedules and is also free.

Marco Polo is overkill if you're only planning on muting system volume IMHO.

If that's *all* someone is going to do then any app is overkill!
As demonstrated above, a little applescript, or some good ol' F3 action will sort out such a simple task.

Hah, do I feel old. I co-designed a CDEV that did this back in the late '80s. You're all invited off my lawn!

I posted this applescript that lets you have the volume get a little louder over time, using iTunes as a gradual alarm clock.

I agree with people who don't want a separate app for every little thing. but you can't speak for everyone, we're all different.

Well I tried SoundAsleep and it didn't do anything. Sounds weren't muted when the mute time struck.

Make sure it's no longer active the Menu Bar (if it's set to NOT load on boot, just restart to remove it from the Menu Bar). Then go to your Applications folder (or wherever you installed it), and drag it into the Trash.

When I installed it, it didn't put any application icon anywhere on my Mac. It's visible in the menu bar, but I don't know how to remove things from the menu bar. The only options I see when I click the menu bar icon are "Use SoundAsleep" and "SoundAsleep Preferences" which has nothing about uninstalling. PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY!!

Same here.. it does nothing. To uninstallit, locate the process in the ActivityMonitor, ForceQuit it and then send the app to the trash where it belongs.
