New head-mounted laser display patent surfaces
Just as you see white ear buds on many iPod owners, you may soon see Mac users with frickin' lasers mounted on their heads. This would bring a whole new meaning to the word "Machead."
You can read the patent application on the US Patent & Trademark Offices' website.

Sweet. I always wanted one of these. Nothing better than wearing them on a monday morning so you can zap kill everyone that looks bad at you.
"Hey I like that Macbook Air..." -zzzzaAAAP!, "Hey! Your wife looks fine" -zzzzaaaaAAAP! "Hey Steve can I drive your Mercedes?" -zzzzaaaaaAAAAAAP!. Then you can download from itunes different laser patterns or you could suck people into your ipod touch... kind of like Tron but better. Then we could trade people on itunes... I tell ya, this could be sweet.

If this thing is even remotely close to seeing reality, the Apple design team are going to have a tough time making that one look good :)

Seeing as this story is about patents, I have to point out this "prior art" wrt. Strange Days.

Neal Stephenson fans will immediately recognize the immense potential for would-be gargoyles everywhere. Sign me up: if I haven't ruined my vision after 14 years of coding, (and fully an hour with a Virtual Boy) it's gonna take this!

Every time I see a new "goggles" type device rumoured or previewed I get my hopes up, ready to go all Hiro. Sadly it's only ever a pale imitation of what it should be. If anyone can pull off the software side, it'll surely be Apple, though. The iPhone/iPod touch has shown that they're still years ahead of everyone else when it comes to interface design and ultra-mobile computing. All we need is someone to work out how to make the hardware!
