Justin Long: PC User?

We've gotten a few tips over the last 24 hours suggesting that 'Mac' -- actor Justin Long, of the I'm a Mac, I'm a PC ad campaign -- made a shopping trip to a Cupertino-area Best Buy and surprisingly, in a bit of a CLM, pooh-poohed the available Apple hardware:

[Best Buy's John] Beck said that he showed Long a variety of machines, however he was not really interested in the products that Apple had. "He said that he's got a few of them at home, but doesn't really use them much. He said that you can't really get any good games for them and that he doesn't like the mouse since it only has one button. He also said that his started crashing a lot ever since he got the latest updates for iTunes."

Leaving aside the question of whether a Hollywood actor is clever enough to grok the Mighty Mouse's right-click capability or using Boot Camp for gaming, it just so happens that all the instances of this story lead back to this Joking Around blog post. Joking Around, which provides amusing fake news ("Making up the news -- because real news is boring!"), is not an actual news source. TUAW giggled at the "Closet PC User" story (although the one about Apple patenting the click is funnier) but in truth we have no idea what platform Mr. Long computes on. It's his business whether he is in fact a PC user or not -- and we think it best to let such personal secrets remain behind closed doors.

[Actually, we're pretty sure he uses a Mac -- but it's still his business]

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I think a lot of people are missing something major here... He's an actor... Im sure Apple doesn't have a contract with him that states that he can only use Apple computers, that would be completely ridiculous. Im sure the truth lies closer to what drklrdbill said... He probably doesn't use a computer that much and when he does, its the free stuff that was given to him. Lets be real, even if this main story above is true, which I highly doubt, I can't see him getting fired from doing Apple commercials, thats a little dense now isn't it?

I'm far more bothered by the fact that he now combs his hair in a way that makes it look like a toupe. Not PC has better hair.

Right, like anyone is going to risk their "best job ever" by dissing their employers products?

I don't think so.

Well, I own a Mac iBook (an old G3) and a Windoze PC running XP. I do most of my gaming on an Xbox Console. I love macs for working with digital media and music as well as writing. I do a lot of my writing on the Mac. There is room for both. IMHO: Even though I have a slow old G3 iBook running Panther; it is better than Windows. I spend more time doing stuff on the Mac than the PC which requires Virus Scans, Spy-Ware Scans and the odd errors that MS throws your way.

Sounds like a story made-up by a Windows user. Considering how much Apple has lined his pockets, I highly doubt that, even if he does use a PC, he'd be dumb enough to risk his contract by making stupid statements like that to a Best Buy salesman.

Since when does TUAW start posting every unconfirmed, unverified rumor like this?

Oh wait... since forever.

This is pretty funny. I actually ran into him at a bar in San Diego over the summer of 2006 (at Comic Con), and we got drunk as hell together (he first came up to me and asked me for a light, and I told him to screw off, since he thought that celebrities could just get whatever they wanted from strangers. He thought this was hilarious, so he bought me and my bud drinks, and we became instant friends), so I obviously brought this issue up. At the time, he said that some random ass PC users would approach him in the streets and try to get him to explain why Macs are better.

His response? "Well, I don't really use a computer at all, but when I do, I use the free ones that Apple sent me." So, pretty much he doesn't really use computers at all.

Any article that purports to quote someone for whom anything anti-Mac would be totally unexpected, and then goes on to detail each and every mac related touchy subject (to the point of reading like a laundry list) smells of shenanigans to me.

Methinks this is a PC Fanboy salesman just trying to raise a stink.

Is this really a big deal? I'm a mac user and let's face it, gaming on the mac sucks. Even with boot camp, a lesser-priced PC can run games far better than most of the computers on Apple's line. And the mighty mouse... well, what can I say about that POS?

The Mac vs PC ads are gold. Even Steve Jobs would be nuts to kill that campaign just because one of the actors owns a couple PCs as well as Macs. Shockingly, the two can co-exist with each other you know.

Yeah, I know how much steve loves his simplicity but one thing I wish he'd kill off is the mighty mouse. I just doesn't seem natural. I wish they would at least give the option to bundle a decent logitech or kensington mouse with new Macs.
