Jason Snell over at Macworld got his hands on an interesting new notebook stand: the Ergotron Neo-Flex Combo Lift Stand. What's different about it is that it not only holds the notebook, like the Griffin Elevator I use, but also includes a VESA mount for an external LCD display. By having the notebook platform and the VESA mount on a single base the Neo-Flex lets you put your laptop screen right next to your external display for a relatively seamless multi-display setup. And since everything is on one base it frees up desk space for your keyboard and mouse.Of course there's a price to be paid for this convenience and stylishness: $179. Nonetheless, this looks like one of the slickest setups out there for using a Mac portable together with an external monitor.

I agree. These greedy businesses should be reminded of the euphemism of catching more flies with sugar versus vinegar. You'd sell a lot more of these if they were $99. It didn't take that much of an R&D budget to make this.

The Ikea Jerker desk (I know, awful Ikea naming at its worst) is about the same price as this thing and comes with something nearly as cool.
If you look at this tiny picture: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.schwimmerlegal.com/images/jerker.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.schwimmerlegal.com/2003/09/how_ikea_comes.html&h=250&w=250&sz=6&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=eAosA3jqKNoFOM:&tbnh=111&tbnw=111&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dikea%2Bjerker%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN
You can see that there's a sort of swivel shelf. But you can mount it on the inside of the desk -- about 5 inches high places your MacBook right in line with a cinema display.
I like it because it sits up and off the desk freeing more space for other things and keeping a safe distance off the desk surface from the occasional spilled latte.
