How better to end a long day of blogging than with some Java? I know, that's a lame joke but think about what I'm working with here: Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Release 1. Apple released this update to Software Update for all you Java thirsty people out there (I promise that's my last Java joke). What does this Java update do? It adds support for Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_05, though only for 64-bit Intel Macs. PowerPC and 32-bit Intel Macs are not invited to this update party. You should note that this update doesn't replace the default install of Java on your Mac, it merely adds support for SE 6.
This update requires OS x 10.5.2 or higher.
Thanks, Chris.

Is your MacBook not a Core2Duo?

I wonder if they will make an update for us who are still in 32-bit land. This is so tiring. I have a Core Duo Macbook pro and I am missing out on more and more things. It's only two years old!

Most 32-bit users probably don't care at all for JDK 6, but I can't help but wonder if this is a preview of things to come.

Why would 64bit users care MORE than 32bit users?
Most users don't actually know what processor is in their own machine, so i don't think its accurate to split the people who care about java6 like that.

I use Eclipse to develop in Java on my MacBook Core Duo and it's annoying not to have Java 1.6. Especially when the 1.6 dev preview worked on Tiger. I ended up using SoyLatte -- and haven't found too many problems with it. http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/

Hey, I just figured out how to stop it from downloading Safari! Wonderful day.
Ooh, and, well, I use java for two apps. Guess it might make Neooffice a bit faster once I install Java SE 6 on it.

What about 64-bit Macs running Tiger? There is no technical reason for not providing Java 6 for Tiger. It most be a pure business (ie profit) thing.
It might be time to look at running Linux on my Mac!
Apple is becoming as bad as MS...

And tell me again why profit is bad? You get a paycheck at your job, right? If they stopped paying you, I assume you would stop showing up? What do they teach kids in college these days?

i'm still on an Imac G5, rather than faster Java i'd like some less processor demanding java! Running NeoOffice or Mercury or Azureus makes my fans sounds like im encoding my entire DVD collection at once.
