iPhone case mod with LED logo

Back in February, we posted a link to a beautiful iPhone case mod that used a matte black TiAIN finish. iPhoneclub community member Jo Croiman has gone in the opposite direction, creating a polished metal beauty complete with LED logo.

The Psycho iPhone Mod, as he calls it, is the result of manufacturing his own rear case pieces, polishing them for hours with a Dremel and affixing LEDs -- taken from another dead iPhone -- underneath a plexiglass logo (the LEDs only pull an additional 50mAh from the battery).

Finally, he sandblasted his own logo into the back of the case. We think it looks fantastic! Great work, Jo.

Sadly, the Intel-parody logo (what were they thinking) and the type at the bottom, ruin an otherwise beautiful mod. Sometimes less is more.

I thought I was a griper. Jeez, need to read whines, come to TUAW!

I give any kudos to someone that THOUGHT and DID something different. The LED touch is nice. The finish is his choice.
Me: if I could justify the hype and price, I would have funded an entire village in Ethiopia or fed them for a year on the $ spent on an iPhone. The labor this guy did was his and he did a nice job. If he had access to better hardware, I wonder what else he could do.
(personally, I would have gotten the back plated with some metal-coating that could take the abuse. My phone needs to work, not say "look at me, look what I have and you don't")

@mike

mike, you need to calm down a bit. The guy actually did a good job on the phone. It is the picture that was taken in a weird manner, making the back of the phone look distorted. Look here for a better shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/textopus_nl/2455289879/in/photostream/ and here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/textopus_nl/2455289815/in/photostream/. It actually looks pretty good if you like a polished back (ala iPod Video). The fact that the Apple is lit up is also impressive. You may not like it, but it is impressive that this guy was able to do it. The "iFoneguide inside" and "Psycho iphone mod" may be a bit much, and I would have written "Psycho iPhone Mod", but it's what the modder likes. I would porbably just write "Psycho iPhone", centered, where he wrote "Psycho iphone mod" and remove the "iFoneguide inside", but the rest looks pretty good. I definitely do not think that it is a "monstrosity". It seems like you need to find some positive things in other individuals' creations. It obviously took this guy quite a bit of time to polish the back of the phone and to install the LED apple, so you should at least give him props for that. And although it may not be "fantastic" in your eyes, it is definitely NOT a "monstrosity". You may not agree with the writer of the article, but I can assure you that very few people would agree with your viewpoint, although you are definitely free to express it. Peace, man!

Very nice. He should have put "iFoneguide Outside" though.

This doesn't really make sense without a time interval attached to it: "The LEDs only pull an additional 50mAh from the battery"

Yeah. Hey, guess what Alex? I am simply expressing my opinion that any website who pays someone to write an article like this saying that they think the monstrosity in that picture looks "fantastic" is a website I need to reevaluate coming to.

Are you a windows user or something? Are you BLIND? Or do you just have no taste? Can you not see that ..thing in the picture? I am seriously concerned about your eyesight if you think that looks good.

In other news, how the hell do you reply to comments on TUAW?

I find it kinda funny how you think your absence here would encourage the writers to be more satisfying to your taste, yet you don't even know where the reply button is :P

Ah well :P

On the other hand, I think the mod (The Apple Logo LED, not the intel bit) DOES look fantastic.

Are you serious? You think that looks GOOD? "Fantastic," even?

I need to seriously re-evaluate coming to TUAW. If you think that looks "fantastic," you have seriously questionable taste.

oh man, yet another person who thinks that his visit to this site is so important that if he threatens to stop coming because of "bad opinions", they'll suddenly redeem themselves and grovel at his feet.

Nice - but the intel-inspired logo spoils it all.
