Boston's Apple Store to open May 16

We've been following the story of Boston's upcoming Apple Store for a long time, and now it's scheduled to open on Friday, May 16th at 6:00 PM. Yes, I'll be there. Say "Hi."

When complete, it will be the ninth store in Massachusetts and certainly the largest ... or will it?

According to Gizmodo, the Boylston St. store will be the largest of all Apple retail stores. Citing "a store employee," Giz reports that an average 1,500-2000 customers/hour will visit the store.

Not so fast, Giz! Our friend Gary at ifoAppleStore shared this tidbit of information with us:

"...the [Boylston Street] lot is only 6,384 square-feet, so the store would have to be at least five stories to be larger than Regent Street (London), at 28,000 s.f."

At four stories high, it cannot be declared the biggest. Sorry, Boston. What we can say is that it opens soon and it's very, very big.

Here are a few shots of "opening day" the Apple Store on Boylston Street. We were quite impressed with the energy of the staff and crowd. The central staircase is simply stunning. A great addition to Boston.

There is a basement. I have been in the place. The stairwell in the center is almost like the one in NY. All glass and self standing. The inside is a mixture of glass and stainless steel with light wooden style tables on the sides. The genius bar on the 3rd flr is a neat thing. Several large screen monitors behind it to let you know who the next customer is in line etc..

Couldn't they just have a basement to make it a total of 5 floors @ ~6300sqft? Let's make a bet, if I'm right, you owe me a beer at the nearest bar (new dropkick murphy's bar?)

Don't forget to see if they've blacklisted TUAW.com on their Macs like they have done at other Apple stores ;-)

It sure would be great if this store opens on the same day the Celtics are knocked out of the playoffs.

Unless it happens sooner.

Do all Apple Stores open on Friday's at 6:00 PM? Because that date and time seem hauntingly similar to the original iPhone launch day & time. Could it be that the new iPhone will launch May 16th?
