Photoshop and trackpad gestures

I'm not a trackpad fan, but I will admit that gestures are cool. Ivan at Creative Bits has identified the gestures available in Photoshop, including
  • Alt (Option) key + double finger track to zoom and out within a document
  • Hold the Apple (Cmd) key to zoom the whole screen
There's more, of course, and you can read the full list here. We recently wrote about some fun you can have using trackpad gestures to zoom and pan images in a Quick Look window.

Ivan also wishes for user-defined gestures, something that only seems logical for Apple to implement.

What's on your "Gestures Wish List?"

I commented over at Creative Bits too, but here it is again for TUAW readers: xGestures http://alum.hampshire.edu/~bjk02/xGestures/

Shareware app ($5) that allows you assign mouse gestures to preform keystrokes and other actions. Multiclutch mentioned above only works if you have a MacBook Air/Pro. xGestures works with any Mac, and works with just about all the software on your machine. Each app can be configured independently, or global gestures can be assigned as well.

I'm using Multi-clutch (great for swiping tabs in Safari), but I'd love an alternative (or better implementation) as its throwing up loads of errors and conflicts in my logs.

uh, just so you know, the key is "option," not "alt." go install windows if you prefer "alt."

That key on my MacBook Pro says "alt" and has a weird symbol under it.

On topic: all those "gestures" also work outside Photoshop ...

I would like to see 2 Gestures for Flash that basically do this:
no matter what part of the UI is selected, you can quickly scrub through the the timeline
and
no matter what part of the UI is selected, you can scroll the stage.

I do realize that the < and > keys work when you are working on the stage to scrub through the timeline- but that's one frame at at time. I would like to be able to easily 'fast forward' in the timeine with a gesture.

Well, that's obviously coming, but in the meantime why didn't you link to Multiclutch? User defined gestures in a quickly installed freeware pref pane. I just used upswipe to trigger my Quicksilver shelf to retreive my TUAW password.

Which modifier do I press to thumb my nose at Vista users as I sail past them on the internet?

Besides becoming a regular poster on Digg, that is.

Not really a photoshop user myself, but for any apps i fancy adding a gesture to, i use multiclutch.

In short it's bloody brilliant. Anything with a keyboard shortcut can have a gesture assigned to it.

p.s. I'm sure most of you may have heard of this - i did find it on TUAW :)

You can hold Ctrl and use two fingers to zoom the whole screen.. That's been around for a long time.

I wouldn't really call these gestures. It sounds like a lot of these are the same as using a scroll wheel on a mouse (ie, holding shift and scrolling zooms in and out, scroll wheel pans around document, etc). And two finger tap as context menu is something that's set in the trackpad pref pane. Am I missing something here?

I'm with you. These 'gestures' are simply scrolling modifiers. Using two fingers has been the method for scrolling on a Mac trackpad for a while now.
