Stumbi: StumbleUpon for Safari
Being a Firefox user (I know, I know, and it crashes on me all the time, but still I run back to it ashamedly), I had no idea that there was a gap in the functionality of StumbleUpon (a handy little link-finding and sharing browser plugin) for Safari users -- it only works with IE and Firefox. But Eli K tipped us off that he's trying to bridge that gap with Stumbi, a StumbleUpon plugin for Safari. It's the very definition of no-frills: it just creates a menu option for StumbleUpon that will let you access the most basic of functions from the Safari browser. And unfortunately, it's not exactly completely easy to get working -- you've got to make sure to install SIMBL (which, helpfully, comes with the binary download), and then the binary also requires a reasonable $2 purchase after 100 stumbles (or, for the more technically inclined, you can download the source and do it all by yourself for free).
But if you just can't live without StumbleUpon, and can't bring yourself to use Firefox to do it, this might be just what you're looking for.
Thanks, Eli!

This is not a "plugin." This is an Input Manager. This is a hack. That doesn't make it bad software, but it's not a supported method of extending Safari; rather, it changes the behavior of OS X to enable its functionality. TUAW writers owe their readers the professional courtesy of making a distinction between the two. If not, get out of the game.
Hopefully, MacJournals will be back online soon and readers can learn more about the difference between the two here (they appear to have hosting issues at time of this post): http://www.macjournals.com/news/inputmanagerhacks.html

You're very welcome! And thanks for writing. Though there actually is slightly fancier toolbar buttons, just choose View->Customize toolbar... and drag away.
Cheers!

If Firefox is crashing on you, it's something with your computer, not Firefox.

Wrong. Firefox crashes on me regularly now too. In fact it crashed while I was reading your post claiming Firefox is OK. It was stable earlier this year but one of the recent Firefox updates has made it unstable. Annoying. I am finding myself switching back to Safari more often now due to this. Clearing caches et al has made no difference. And if it were my system, you'd think other apps would be crashing. They're not--it's just Firefox.

StumbleUpon is the ONE thing I miss about my old Windows laptop. I've tried Firefox for OS X and haven't been a fan. Thanks for posting this! And thanks to Dan as well for pointing that out.

I keep running back as well, so I feel your pain. However, I just tried the release candidate for Firfox 3 and have run it for 3 days with no crashes. Here's hoping that this continues to hold true.
