Lancaster mall to get Apple store in fall
Is it strange to feel affectionate towards a shopping mall? While I didn't visit Park City in Lancaster, PA as a kid, I still have a sense of it being "my mall" -- my wife grew up in Lancaster, and I think over the years I've absorbed some of her connection to the place. Retail nostalgia by spousal proxy? I'll have to check for that in the DSM-IV.
Now, with confirmation that an Apple Store is heading for Park City (initially reported by ifoAppleStore in April), I'm struck by this odd sense of pride mixed with relief. Pride, because my adopted mall is getting its own Apple Store at last; relief, because now I can dispatch my father-in-law somewhere closer to home when he needs hardware help. Maybe I should visit the Genius Bar there and leave them a photograph and an system profile, just in case.
LancasterOnline.com reports that the store will occupy a 4,900-square-foot slot in the mall, and it's expected to open by late October 2008. I hope that the presence of the new store will validate and enhance business at Lancaster's indie Mac dealership Macheads, but I fear that they may find business slipping over to the new shop over time.
Thanks, CR!

I honestly hope MacHeads finds a swift and fast closing shortly after the real Apple Store opens at Park City. That retail space would be much better served as a Starbucks.
We've never had a good experience at MacHeads. They wanted to charge us labor after a logic board replacement because THEY forgot to connect a speaker cable on our eMac! I refer everyone I know elsewhere and have steered at least a dozen system purchases away from their store. Awful, dreadful people who think they have a monopoly. Well, not for long.
The Lancaster store can't come soon enough. Honestly, I was surprised that York or Harrisburg didn't get one first...that's the way it usually happens around here. The Apple Store will definitely drive extra traffic to Park City - if I was a retailer in that area of the mall, I'd be very excited.
Hello all, as a long time reader of TUAW I feel I need to point one thing out. There is more than one indie Apple Reseller in the area. I'm the Apple Salesman at TCW Computers where we both sell and service anything you have! Michael, have your father-in-law give me a call next time he needs anything!

Thanks for the tip. He's in Harrisburg, so the Manheim office would be very convenient. I'll be sure to let him know!
It might help if you identified somewhere in this article which state this was in. There's more than one town in the US called Lancaster, and most of em have malls.

Screw MacHeads.
I live a mile away from them, and they've always had crap for selection, and customer service is harrumphish, at best.
Needed a PRAM batteryâright awayâand they wanted to charge me 15.95 + tax. I was floored...that was even more expensive than RadioShack.
I ended up driving across to town to a place where the people are friendly and the prices are excellent:

Amendment to my above post:
MacHeads wanted $16.95 for the PRAM battery.
Battery Warehouse charged my $8.17, tax included. And again, they are genuinely nice people, and very knowledgeable.
MacHeads charged my mom's company $100 to even "diagnose" an iBook G4 which at the time was covered under Apple Care. I had already diagnosed the problem with Apple Support as the AirPort card, but they refused to listen.
$130 later (I purchased a refurb AirPort card) and absolutely no problems. I'll never step foot in MacHeads again.
My Inlaws live in Lancaster. I have never succesfully bought anything from MacHeads. They never have anything in stock, they are not very pleasant and they are not very helpful. So I imagine their days are numbered. If you don't provide customer service, someone will.
May 30 2008 at 4:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's about time! I've been driving to King of Prussia for the past 5 years for my Apple stuff! It will be nice to be able to drive 5 miles to buy my stuff!
Also, MacHeads BLOWS! Their customer service sucks and they basically have no inventory. Why go there and have them order it, when you can order it yourself or drive to KOP. It sucks to see a small business go under (which they eventually will), but at the same time they provided nothing or real value.
Dude, I told TUAW about this about two maybe three months ago when my Maryland MAC buddy told me it was happening. He's already put in for the transfer, will be moving here, so we can hang out more, and now, we will have a common store to shop in!! Can't wait.
And yes, you can get lost in park city and its dumb to have to walk down a wheel up a wheel, but at least you get the exercise when you are lost.
For me its to EB games and wherever the wife likes to go (Victoria Secret/H&M) now we will have the Apple Store to get 'lost' in.
It will compliment very nicely my Alma Mater, Franklin & Marshall College. The school is predominantly Mac based. Now they'll have a noncampus store to fulfill their Apple urges.
May 30 2008 at 1:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythese is awesome news. i grew up across the creek (with a lovely covered bridge) from the Park City mall - worked at Sears selling Craftsman tools in high school and college.
This will definitely help convince my family to go Mac!
I live in Lancaster and I am quite happy to hear this is official. Craigslist has had a job posting for Apple Store employees at Park City for awhile now. I have used the MacHeads shop that Michael refers to several times in the past for service and support and I hope they will be able to stay open. They do good work and they have a nice store, albeit a bit on the small side.
May 30 2008 at 1:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI absolutely hate Mac Heads. I've never had good customer service from them, nor have they even tried to fix problems that I've had.
I ended up having to replace a part myself because they didn't feel the need to do proper testing or troubleshooting.
Any info on that craigslist post?
I wasnt able to find it.
Thanks
