The best-in-class notification framework for Mac OS X,
Growl, just got updated to version 1.1.3. One of the most missed features of Growl was GrowlMail, which allows Growl to issue incoming notifications from Mail.app --
Apple disabled this feature in the Mac OS X 10.5.2 release. However, the Growl team has re-written GrowlMail to work with Mail.app and 10.5.3.
Some of the other updates include:
- GrowlSafari now works with Safari 3.0 and later
- GrowlTunes doesn't show ratings from iTunes unless the song has a rating above 0
- GrowlTunes is now localized in German
- Memory leaks fixed in WebKit display
- You are now able to see notifications on every space in Spaces in Leopard
You can see the full list of updates / additions on the
Growl version history page. You can also download this update by going to the
Growl website and clicking "Download." Growl is, of course, free and open-source.
Thanks, Peter!

It didn't work for me either then I read this on the Growl forums:
1. Open Terminal
2. Type sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/InputManagers
3. Type sudo chmod -R go-w /Library/InputManagers
4. Restart Safari.

Hm... thanks, Arnoz.
However, considering that it worked initially for none of us here, perhaps they should have tested it more thoroughly, or made the installer better, or included a readme.

Arnoz: Very interesting. I'll post your suggestion on our discussion list and see whether it works for anybody else. If it does, I'll see about integrating either or both of those steps into the GrowlSafari Installer package.
Thanks!

"Install Failed
The installer encountered and unknown error that failed the install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
This is under 10.5.3 on a March 2008 MBP. I have a previous version of Growl installed which has been working fine.

If an error occurs, be sure to Uninstall 1.1.2 first.
Log out.
Then install 1.1.3.
Worked for me.

I've always had trouble with Growl networking. But I'm interested, so I'll give it another shot...

For those with the instal failing, i had the same issue that was resolved if you drag and drop the growl.mpkg out of the .dmg file before you instal it (i just put it on my desktop and it worked)

That has nothing to do with the “Install Failed” message and did not have any effect on it. The Installer package almost always works the second time, whether you it's on the disk image or not.
As for why you need to run it twice in the first place: I think it's a bug in either Installer or PackageMaker. As such, I've filed it with Apple (#5991636).

And for those using Entourage 2008, I have posted a script to show notifications, including different icons for urgency levels:

Growl networking still not working for me. They need to either get this sorted or get it out of the app - pointless.

Can you be more specific than “not working”?
Also, you're welcome to send a description of your problem to our discussion mailing list (http://groups.google.com/group/growldiscuss).

Thanks, but I wasted time on this on the forums with several other users a few versions ago and nothing came of it. It's not important enough for me to go through all that again.

I can't get GrowlMail to work, even though they said it would. It won't even appear on the Applications menu for Growl.

You need to run this command:
defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles -bool YES
GrowlMail's Installer package runs a similar command, but Mac OS X has started ignoring it in Leopard (possibly in 10.5.3). I intend to file this as a bug.

This is great, I love growl, but it broke when I upgraded to Leopard. I never had the time to do a clean install of Leopard, but this latest upgrade to Growl has solved the problem.
