iToner 1.0.7 is available
iToner by Ambrosia Software lets iPhone owners put an unlimited number of custom ringtones onto their phones with no hacks and no per-ringtone fees. We've written about iToner several times, and interviewed Ambrosia's president Andrew Welch about the future of the product. This week, iToner 1.0.7 was made available. Changes include:
- Fixes with iTunes compatibility. iToner should no longer prevent iTunes from removing iTMS ringtones.
- Fixed crash when syncing with iPod touch from iTunes
- Various fixes and enhancements
This is a free upgrade to registered users. iToner costs $15US, requires Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later, and is a Universal Binary application.

Is this bad timing or what? We're expecting the new firmware to be released on Monday. Just in time to break this program again.

you could spend $15 to do this with iToner... or you could choose the "Share -> Send Ringtone to iPhone" option in GarageBand for free.
hmm...

On both of my Macs, I prefer the "Share -> Send Ringtone to iPhone" option that Devin mentioned.
But Windows users don't have that luxury so for them I suggest audiko.net which allows you to upload MP3s, AAC, and Ogg Vorbis, or you can give it a Youtube URL and it will extract the audio.
Then it lets you pick what portion of the audio you want to use for the ringtone. Once you've done that and it has done all of its encoding, it gives you several download options, one of which is for the iPhone.
You are also able to search through all the ringtones that others have made.

It's rather common to believe that ilife comes with every mac. But one thing to keep in mind is that iLife has always been a separate software for purchase.
So those who did not buy a Mac with iLife bundled in but want to do ringtones for their iPhone may find this program more economical. At $15 dollars its a lot better positioned than the $79 price for iLife.

Wrong. iLife *does* come with every Mac, and AFAIK it's been that way since the beginning. From Apple's press release for iLife 08:
"The iLife ’08 suite of applications will be included with all new Macs beginning today."
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/08/07ilife08.html
That doesn't mean the upgrades are free, but if you've bought a Mac in the last five years, you got whatever version of iLife was available that day. (I remember telling a friend who was thinking of updating an old Mac that the then-new Minis were almost worth buying just for the software--$129 for OS X and $79 for iLife = 42% of their $499 price.) However, iLife does not, and never has, come with retail boxed copies of OS X, which is what might be confusing you.

I should have clarified that it was for those that have purchased a retail version of OSX.
So to rephrase, if you purchased a Mac and installed OSX from a retail disc then you may want to consider this software if all you want to do is put ringtones on your iPhone since iLife would be an additional $79 purchase.

or how about, in order to do this, dont you already need a jailbroken phone? and if so, why wouldnt you just use phonezap, and create the ringtone directly on the phone. no syncing issues or itunes issues.....
