.Mac to MobileMe: what's the deal?

The short version is that your .Mac account email address will work just as it did before, but you'll have a choice of using either username@mac.com or username@me.com. If you have aliases setup at .Mac they will continue to work as well. All your .Mac websites will continue to work at both mac.com and me.com. Your email and contacts will magically be transferred to MobileMe, but you will no longer be able to check you accounts using Mac.com's website: it'll all happen over at Me.com.
Also, the increased storage limits will be applied to your account, but it might take up to 10 days after the migration from .Mac to MobileMe before you see the new limits reflected in your accounts.

I must know! What about custom domains? I can't just change email addresses! I've had dotmac since the very day it came out as iTools, but long ago stopped using the email address it came with. Its functionality has been limited in the last few years to contact and calendar syncing, and even there I've lost interest as google calendars began to take over that function as well. And Picasaweb took over dotmac web albums.
I'd love push email, but I can't just start using a me.com address or mac.com address. I know in my desktop Mail application I can put another email address in the preferences field and send mail "as" that email address, but on my iPhone, it won't let me do that. Dotmac is dotmac and you can only put in a .mac email address.
Plus, can we share calendars across mobile me accounts? I love that function in google calendars! Contact syncing is basically the only thing I use dotmac for anymore, and I was about to just let it expire this year after years of membership.....

I was truly hoping that we would have the ability to do custom domains for e-mail. At this point I assume we can only use our own domains for the web hosting side of things.

Can you explain sending e-mail from another e-mail address other than your own? That's the only reason I go to Gmail's website because I use Gmail to aggregate all my school e-mail for easy searching.

In google, you can (as you have already figured out) retrieve email from another server, but you can also set up various email addresses to "send mail as" as well. Obviously you have to own those email addresses (it will send a confirmation email first) but once you've authorized it, you can then receive AND send as another email address. You can even make that non-gmail address your default email so gmail is completely invisible.
I used to run IMAP for my underlying domain, but now I have it just set up as a blunt forward to my gmail, where I default "send as" under that email account. It works beautifully. I also have it pull mail from my dotmac account, but I never send mail as dotmac.

I have recently completed a trial account with .Mac and have yet to pay for the year. If I don't pay for the account prior to MobileMe launching, should I still have access to that mac.com e-mail address? Also, does it seem that we have to make a permanent choice on which domain to use (mac.com/me.com) when the transition happens or will we have flexibility to change this later?

My .mac trial has expired but now I'm interested in buying the family pack now in preparation for the ME transition. The problem is that .mac charges $179 for the family pack while MME charges $149. Any way around this?

I don't have a .Mac account, so I'm not familiar with how this process works, but here's what I'm curious about...
This whole e-mail syncing sounds great, but I don't want to write people using "me.com".
I have my own domain name.
Can I use other e-mail accounts with the MobileMe system too? If so, that would be great.

I would get this in a flash if I could use my own domain for emails.

Does anyone know the reason for what's at Me.Com now?
http://www.me.com/
I would have thought it would be blank or have a 'Coming Soon' tag.

A little while after the WWDC ended, it now redirects to http://www.apple.com/mobileme/

Glad I can continue to use xxx@mac.com, the whole ME thing reeks of: "My Computer", WindowsME, VB6's ".me" as opposed to C++/Java/C# ".this", etc. Wonder if they'll tap 2LiveCrew for a theme song: "Me So Horny, Love You Long Time!"

Apart from the push, I am not sure what extra this gives over .Mac
Meh, You can use an alias on .Mac, including your own domain name.
Hope you can still do that in the MobileMe world

Okay, I live mobile me so far, but a few concerns (which tie into the iphone update as well).
1) What about tasks & notes syncing? This would be really useful for me, anyone else agree or am I alone in this one.
2) .mac groups? Will there be improvement.

am waiting to buy a new macbook this fall. Just wondering if I HAVE to upgrade to OX 10.4.11 to be able to access my .mac email? I'm on 10.4.8 - didn't want the hassle of an upgrade - I was hoping to just buy new in a few months.
What's going to happen to subscribers on older systems? Do you think we'll have to scramble to upgrade when this launches?
i can't believe they're ditching the mac url - "me" is a little silly
