Apple seeds developers with Safari 4.0
Apple has seeded developers with a copy of the new Safari 4, which adds some new features and is based on a newer version of WebKit. Apple is also rumored to be using the SquirrelFish JavaScript engine which allows for faster Javascript processing.New to this version of Safari is the ability to save webpages as "Web Applications." This new feature allows Safari to save pages similar to the way Fluid does. You also have the ability to choose how new windows will open (i.e. with your favorite bookmark, blank page, etc.).
One of the biggest "features" is the fact that Safari 4 (along with the new version of WebKit) scored a perfect 100/100 on the Acid3 test. If you are inclined to see what the new version looks like, World of Apple has placed some screen grabs on their blog for your viewing pleasure.

The nightlies have been getting 100/100 for a while now. Since March 26th it would seem. http://webkit.org/blog/173/webkit-achieves-acid3-100100-in-public-build/

Safari 3 already has this feature, right?

I think this has to do with new tabs and windows, that is, after you have a current window open. I hope it is, cause then I can code something like speed dial of Opera and have it pop up every time I create a new tab.
Also, one word, demonoid.

can you explain how this would be beneficial for using demonoid?
just curious, i use demonoid a bunch, trying to see how this could possibly make the site that much better :)

You don't need to be a paid-up ADC member to get this. It's available for download if you're a member of the free "ADC Online"

Any word on if this new version lets you make new windows ALWAYS open in a new tab? I'm tired of having to ctrl click on any link I suspect might open a new window.

Let's hope they have also improved Safari's ridiculous memory use so that it stays under 300mb for a change.....

If you want to test the next version of Safari, download the latest nightly. For the most part, in real browsing terms, it's not that much faster.
I ran a JS speed test on my MacBook. On a good chunk of operations, it's 2-3 times faster than the current Safari. Problem is, Safari is already so fast with JS, that time is measured in fractions of a microsecond.
I imagine some theoretical "Web 2.0" app will be able to benefit in real world terms from this, I'm not seeing a difference.

Perhaps that theoretical new app is MobileMe.com... ;-)
I ran the WebKit nightly and got the same results- much faster in the JS tests, but similar real-world performance (that is, very satisfactory.)

It does cost $4.90 tho

The most recent version of WebKit nightly actually tests better than the current release of Safari 4. I expect this will change if future updates though.
