Parallels adds tools for Linux, 3D for Windows

The latest build of Parallels (version 5608) adds some new tools for Linux users. Some of the additions to Parallels Desktop 5608 includes: support for the latest Linux distros, and support for 3D graphics in Windows (running under 10.5.3).

This is pretty great news. I really want to try out Leopard Server, but I don't want to buy new apple hardware to do that and my Mac Pro is a great way to accomplish this. Most of my tasks dont use 400% cpu anyways.
We have 3 Windows Server 2K3 boxes and it would be nice to see how a OS X Server acts as a citizen of the AD.

Dear TUAW-
Keep the IT stuff coming. It is very interesting and under-covered in Mac News.

I'm just waiting for someone (I own both Virtualization products) to offer Open GL support so that I can use Fusion inside of Ubuntu or Fedora, I haven't totally settled on a distro yet (yum is a really easy to learn package manager, so I'm leaning towards Fedora).

Exactly! I really would like to have OpenGL support to use Compiz/Fusion! Has anyone been able to find a way to have this run on Parallels or VMware?

I swear I hate upgrading Parallels. Every time I do it I have a drastic problem. The last time I upgraded, for some reason I had to dig into the hard drive image and pull out the data because the image became corrupted. I vowed never to upgrade again. I was running a version from December, and it was working fine. This time I decide to go ahead and upgrade, and now when I click on the play button to start the VM, I get a beach ball. Forget it.

Just a report from the "field": After upgrading (and setting the VM's video memory to 32 MB, I'm able to run Project 64 (a Nintendo 64 emulator for, erm, playing public domain N64 tech demos ;)...) to playable speeds with only occasional crashing. I hadn't tried it before the upgrade though.

I tried installing parallels tools on Ubuntu 8.04. It still does not work. According to the Parallels forums, there will be another build that will support 8.04 by the "End of June"

I had high hopes for this release, but they were smashed. I guess I can wait a few more weeks.
