Take Control of Back to My Mac / Screen Sharing in Leopard
Glenn Fleishman of Macworld, Wi-Fi Networking News and TidBITS fame has written two new Leopard ebooks, both published today by Take Control Books. The new titles, Take Control of Back to My Mac and Take Control of Screen Sharing in Leopard, are part of the popular Take Control ebook series. Take Control of Back to My Mac provides many tips on how to get
The books are $10 each, but if you purchase both ebooks and enter CPN006780611BUN as a coupon code, you'll get an immediate $5 discount. There's no excuse to suffer in silence with Back to My Mac anymore!
In the interest of disclosure, I've written two titles for Take Control Books, neither of which are discussed in this post.

Why someone would pay anything at all for a glorified help file is something that I just don't understand.

Right. Because my spending dozens upon dozens of hours researching all the problems with how Back to My Mac works, finding solutions, providing configuration instructions, tips, etc., is just...a glorified help file.
I've been writing computer books for about 15 years, and I find there's still this notion (perhaps due to certain series of books) that a "computer book" walks through the menus of a program and describes features.
If I can help you avoid the heartbreak of NAT, the disappointment of failed connections, the dismal frustration of staring at a screen when nothing works...well, that's what my books are about!
(Anyway, you can download and read excerpts to see if it's what you need.)

This is because people use AdBlocker. If the content was free to us and cost the Ad Companies money, then that would be a way for them to bring these "Tips" to us for free.
My boss has been struggling to get back-to-my-mac working on his old Netgear Wireless B router that supports UPNP. I am tempted to get this, but was a little pissed that it costs 5-10 bucks depending on how you delegate your coupon.

Since 10.5.3 I have absolutely no Apple-based issues with Back To my Mac or screen sharing.
However, if I do restart my Mac while at many hotels I stay in I have to connect via my USB card on my carrier's network to get see it as many hotel's firewalls don't permit UPnP. But after it sees it via the USB card I can switch back to the faster hotel network and conenct with no problems.
Anyone having issues with 10.5.3?

"neither of which IS discussed"
neither is a singular noun (think "neither ONE" in your head and you won't get confused)

Big hint for those still having problems: Try turning off your firewall. BTMM should work

I am going to be polite about this.. but you should never ever turn off your firewall.. except as a diagnostic measure. You should forward the ports.

Except that if you're on a secure network that's not possible.
Really BTMM should be making outgoing connections to a central server to punch a hole that way rather than relying on hacks.

Back to my mac is a bit of a problem to install as well log into and track, plus the subscription costs are not cheap. I purchased a product from antitheft.net.au which emails the details as well as video and still pictures, SMS me if it is activated and mms me also. So I know it is gone if I am away for a few days and it is stolen. 1 price to purchase, plus free updates. I can also coincide this with Back to my mac if need be.
