Spore Creature Creator now available
The Spore Creature Creator is a preview and demo for the full Spore game, which is scheduled for release on September 7. As you might expect from the name the Creature Creator allows you to build and customize creatures which you'll later be able to use in gameplay once the full game is released. I've been playing with the trial this morning and it does look very promising.
The Spore Creature Creator is Leopard and Intel Mac only. It requires at least an ATI X1600 or NVidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100. It will apparently not run on computers with the GMA 950 integrated graphics chipset on OS X (though, it will on Windows). The trial version can be downloaded directly from the Spore trial site.
Thanks, Shiraz!

this is a real let down, I was really hoping that the Mac Mini would be able to run this game, I'm severely disappointed.

Getting the Mac version right now, but on EA's web site only the PC version of the full game is available for pre-order. I wonder if there is a Mac version pre-order link somewhere and I'm going blind and not seeing it.

There doesn't seem to be any way to get hold of the full version of Creature Creator for Mac; and the purchase link in this post just goes to an empty basket on EA's store.

yeah - I really really want to get my hands on the full version of the creature creator, but it only the PC version seems to be up for preorder.
I also wonder if preordering the full Spore would also unlock the creature creator?

Look on Amazon.com they have it for sale. If you look at the picture of the box, it says win/mac cdrom. It is probably a hybrid disc with both versions on it, similar to what Blizzard does with their games.

It really is astonishing that they're supporting most Intel Macs as long as they're running the OS that came out a few days ago. (Note that it isn't Leopard-only per se; it's 10.5.3 only.) I have a hard time believing this depends on Dock reflections or translucent menu bars.
(And yes, EA's said all along that it will come on a hybrid disk.)

You think a 250mb update like that 10.5.3 is about the dock? They changed graphics drivers and OpenGL.

No, I was being sarcastic.
But I'm willing to bet SCC (and the full Spore) would still have looked pretty sweet on 10.4.x OpenGL. Maybe we'd see fewer gradients or the creatures would have to hop around at 40fps instead of 60fps. That's a bullet I would've taken.

Seems like EA did the bare minimum to support this on the Mac... I could live with no PowerPC support. But I find it amazing that my C2D MacBook can't run it because it has a GMA 950 instead of the GMA X3100...
Even more annoying -- if I installed Windows XP via Boot Camp on the MacBook, it would work. Thanks EA...

My advice: Install Windows. Rebooting is a simple thing to do, but people love to make it seem like it's the worst thing they can imagine. I do lots of gaming on my mac these days, and it's all in Windows. There's really no point to being stuck as a second class citizen when full support and speed for games is just a restart away.

It's a freaking PC game with a Cider wrap. Little Snitch gave me an audio warning that Cider was trying to access the net.
Typical EA crap. I knew that a native OS X version would be too much to ask from them. Are they hoping to Cider wrap for the iPhone as well?

Ran fine on my 2.4Ghz MBP(17") at 1920x1200. The fps is decent enough for the editor and the test scene.
I've had fun creating some creatures named Blobby, WiltTheStilt, and MrPrick :)

Please stop ranting about cider. It works like a charm, so be happy you can play it on your mac.
Lovely game!

Not on GMA 950s. Disgraceful the Spore can run on Pentium 4s and not on some Macs barely over a year old...

This is the first game that I've wanted to play, been looking forward to it for ages, and now find that I can't because my year old macbook has the GMA 950.
Completely gutted :(
