Whats the camera hole on the front? This was not mentioned at WWDC. Have I missed something?

It is not a camera hole, its a hole for the proximity sensor that turns off the screen when you hold the phone up to your face, so you don't hang up on grandma with your cheek.

Thanks, John - I've updated the update. I forgot about that damned proximity sensor... So what's the other slot between the prox sensor and the ear speaker?

Good catch, Tober! I've updated the article with a closeup of the camera hole. There have been unsubstantiated rumors about a "videophone camera" on the front of the iPhone 3G, and I wonder if you just found proof!

Can you say "proximity sensor"?

Nice job, lazy. Don't strain yourself and describe them in the same order as the picture to make it easy and understandable. Duh.

Thanks for your sarcastic comment, Mark. I've updated the article to reflect your suggestion. Sorry if I'm acting a little slow - I've been "living" at a hospice for the last few days caring for a relative who is about to pass on.

I thought the vertical spot to the right of the "camera" hole was the proximity sensor.
Kind of like on the non-3G iPhone.

My iPod Touch case (hard clear plastic shell, made by DLO I think) has the same hole but no slot. I assumed it was for an ambient light sensor, which would make sense because the Touch doesn't need a proximity sensor.

There's also the "ambient light sensor"

Ok guys, so why is there THREE holes in front-top?
See, it's more clear on this Sport Grip:

Sound, Proximity and Ambient Light…
C'mon, it's not that hard to search a little…

One hole for the proximity sensor, one for the ambient light sensor, and one for the speaker.
Frankly, I think this makes a lot of cases look ugly, and I prefer Griffin's "one big hole" approach.
And Steve, sorry to hear that, hope everything works itself out. :(

More important to me is when will all the old iPhone cases go on clearance?

That's nice and all, but when can we have some decent speaker docks?
