New screenshots of Snow Leopard appear, show desktop web apps
A German site, Apfeltalk.de has posted screenshots of the forthcoming version of Mac OS X, 10.6 (a.k.a "Snow Leopard"). Most of the screenshots show off the Safari 4 developer preview that will include the "Save as Web Application" option in the File menu.
The website also shows off the next version of Address Book.app that will bring Microsoft Exchange support to the Mac platform. We do however have to speculate about the System Preferences.app screenshot that shows two Time Machine icons with one labled "Dock" and another labeled "Time Machine" -- this seems out of place and unlike Apple.
You can see all of the screenshots (before Apple's legal team gets a hold of them) on the Apfeltalk.de site.

So in other words, some programmers at Apple saw Fluid and liked it..... ;-)

I'm not convinced these are real. I don't see why the whole OS is in german, except for Safari, which is in english; unless they simply installed the Safari 4 developer preview available for free from ADC on the german version of OS X 10.5 (changing the info on the About This Mac window is pretty simple.)

Don't get me wrong: skepticism is definitely useful, and you are right, most of these screenshots look "unfamiliar" and "strange".
However, apfeltalk.de is a notable and well-known tech blog, in a way similar to TUAW, albeit not that popular, of course. So I guess they do not present fake screenshots to their loyal readers. But if they did, the reputation of their website would be seriously damaged and the blogosphere would point their fingers on them screaming "FAKE!". Oh wait... actually, that's what we're doing right now as a matter of fact. ;-)

Looks more like a preview of Safari 4 running on 10.5 Leopard. Also, why on earth would this photo of the system preferences show both Time Machine and the Dock as having the same icon?

Smells like some BS to me.

The whole two icon thing is a bug. I always have messed up system prefs icons in tiger. It seems to be a cache thing.

What would be a practical application of the web apps feature?

Making an application out of a web utility like a word translator or a calculator would be useful. I don't think making apps out of regular web pages is particularly useful though.
One question - does the app store the data from the page, allowing you to access it even when you don't have internet access?

Unfortunately, that would be impossible with most applications, as they depend on some server-side stuff. Without the server, it would be crippled or completely broken.

This is all very well, but given that after logging in to developer.apple.com/mac/ I get a "server is not responding" message. Checking on the apfeltalk website, the post was at 12.24 yesterday, and as it's German that probably means 10.24 GMT (11.24 BST).
I first noticed the ADC site was down at around 18.30 BST (17.30 GMT).
It has been down for at least 16 hours, but probably was available for the Safari 4 download either on Friday or early Saturday.
>16 hours of downtime. Seems a lot for ADC.
[hmmm, now I just got "Error", but it was the Mac Dev Center]
[hmm, now it says "ADC Membership Required... try again...]
[https... I'm sure that wasn't there before...]
[Safari could not open the page “https://developer.apple.com/mac/index.php” because the server is not responding.]

Wouldn't Snow Leopard have MobileMe branding instead of . Mac?

Anyone else notice that in the address book screenshot, the little card that is usually at the very top of the window next to the words "Address Book" is missing?
Something about these makes me distrust them.

Snow Leopard can't come soon enough. Leopard is pretty much Apple's Vista. I rolled back to Tiger months ago. It doesn't have the eye-candy, but it's way more stable.

Damn, I was too late.

For all you people screaming fake, remember this this is an early, early beta. The last thing to get polished in a new operating system is the GUI, the the missing and incorrect icons are probably bugs.
If any of you have taken a look at the early Windows 7 or Leopard screenshots, you'll know that they looked quite similar to their previous iterations.
So the pictures are *probably* real, but it *probably* doesn't matter, because the interface will get upgraded to some degree anyway.

I know apple isn't planning to introduce any new features on the surface but how about at least some minor UI changes?
PLEASE get rid of the aqua buttons, drop-down menu's and scroll-bars.
Replace them with black or white iphone like buttons and UI elements. Or in the style of the time-machine preference pane buttons in the system preferences.

Nah. All they have to do is complete the transition to the iTunes theme. The iTunes-esque Leopard theme is quite good, though incomplete. Buttons still need to be made.

I couldn't agree more! They need to replace the stoplight buttons with buttons that have much less eye candy and look more professional
The list headers need to be replaced by the iTunes list headers
The scrollbars need to be replaced by the iTunes scrollbars
The drop-down menus need to be replaced by the iTunes store drop-down menus
The buttons need to be replaced by the iTunes buttons (e.g. the one in the store that says your email address)
I'd also like to see an option for white or graphite iTunes elements, aaand the Tiger dock. Then I'll be happy :)
(Or just anything to replace Aqua. Not that Aqua is bad, it's just waay to flashy and doesn't match well with Leopard)

"PLEASE get rid of the aqua buttons, drop-down menu's and scroll-bars."
Oh my goodness. I couldn't decide whether to just ignore this as it's so out of touch or to try to condense a few year's skills in interfaces into a few sentences. I still can't.
But before launching into something as in orbit as this it might behoove the poster to take a second look at where interfaces have been for the past thirty years and how the Cocoa classes are structured.

When Leopard betas were out you could see similar "issues" with languages. For example some os components were in finnish, but new and changed ones (eg. the ones not yet translated) were in english, so it can very well be that every other thing in that preview release is in german but safari 4 and addressbook exhange preview are in english...
