Logitech releases Mac-only webcam; cats, dogs reported living together
Apologies to Dr. Peter Venkman, but it's hard to believe that it's taken this long for a webcam vendor to encroach on the vacuum left by the discontinued iSight, even though we have hints that a new model of the Apple camera might be on the HD horizon. Logitech has now announced the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, featuring "premium autofocus technology and Carl Zeiss® optics." No word on whether the camera will feature fine Corinthian leather or Posi-traction, but there's hope.Seriously, though, the camera does offer a voice coil motor for autofocus, RightLight exposure technology and a 2 megapixel sensor; this should allow for VGA-quality (640x480) videoconferencing and 720p HD (960x720) local video recording. Snazzy! Logitech expects to ship the unit in July for an SRP of $130.
Update: Commenters point out that the product is quite similar to the QuickCam Pro 9000, which isn't billed as Mac-compatible but actually works just fine with Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5; it's also list-priced $30 cheaper. Hrm.

just wanted to confirm that the new "mac only" version of this camera works no better than the 9000.
still images work great in programs like Quicktime Pro....but it will only shoot in highest res....which means, yes....very low frame rate....blur city.
there is no way i can find to bring down the res and thus allow for higher frame rates.
this is very disappointing.
if anyone has a work around....please post it here!
is the Quickcam Pro 9000 works on 10.3.9 ????

June 24 2008 at 3:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's been an often-time tactic to package the same product twice, one with 'Windows dressing' and another with 'Mac dressing'. The reason I've seen over the last decade usually has to do with the bundled software -- the hardware manufacturer makes a deal with a software publisher to include their software with x number of units, and want to report how many units are sold so that the software publisher can get a check for the appropriate amount.
For the Mac version, the software might not have been developed by the same software shop; or it may have been licensed under different terms -- so it is critical for the hardware manufacturer to keep sales of both packages clearly delineated.
There are only three ways out of this for the manufacturer, and sometimes none of them are favorable or even possible:
1) They could choose to bundle software from a company that develops both Mac and PC versions of the same utility.
2) They could develop their own software, internally.
3) They could use generally-accepted industry standards when creating their hardware, so that free (public domain, open-source, etc.) software can be downloaded by the customer.
All of the above choices might be a bad fit, depending on the type of hardware -- but the best for us as consumers is often a compromise between (1) & (3) or (2) & (3).
Regardless of the path chosen, MY favorite vendors are the ones who will make it clear on their websites and on their packaging when standards are closely adhered to, enabling me to choose which software I use regardless of what a device is bundled with. That knowledge makes me feel more secure in my purchase, since the product's continued functionality will not hinge upon the continued existence of the manufacturer.
with the 9000 the autofocus doesn't work on a mac. it's based on the driver which isn't available for the mac. I think logitech should release the driver for the 9000 users on a macâ¦
June 24 2008 at 1:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo... does this mean I can simply use the drivers for this unit with my Quickcam Pro 9000, or is logitech going to force me to pay another $130 after I *just bought* a Quickcam not one month ago for better Mac performance?
I really hope the software works...
A little off topic...
I need to be able to take pictures from a web came device and save the image on my computer. I can't use the built in iSight on my iMac because I want to take pictures of people standing in front of my iMac. Just like at Sam's club you stand in front of a camera for the membership card.
Any ideas?
Any webcam software for the Mac should be able to do this.
Saying that, why not use a regular camera? Some DSLRs (and some P&S iirc) have tethering software you can use to download the image right to your Mac after it's taken. You'll also get a Flash by doing this.
Ron, if you mean that the person you're photographing is standing BEHIND your iMac... well, if you had a MacBook Pro, you could use the Huckleberry from ecamm.com. In this case, probably better to get a standalone webcam.
