Blizzard announces Diablo III for Mac

Blizzard has always been a (the?) Mac-friendly game developer and they have now officially announced the forthcoming release of Diablo III. Nearly a decade after the last installment of the popular action-RPG, Blizzard plans a simultaneous release for Mac and PC (just like StarCraft II).

As of yet the details, including release date and system requirements, are sketchy. However, the game will run a custom 3D graphics engine and return players to familiar territory and stories from Diablo II. I really think Blizzard deserves a hand for their commitment to bringing such A-list titles to the Mac day and date with the PC versions.

I for one wish they would fix d2 and sc for Macbook Pro users. I hate having to reboot into XP to play these games when a client works for Mac.

To those naysayers who think d2 is irrelevant on OS X, name one hack and slash RPG that is as fun as d2 that does not require PC?

It sucks, we have so few game options to begin with. We don't need Apple inadvertently blowing up two of the best games ever.

FIX D2 and SC!

I installed 10.5.4 in the hopes of that alleviating the crashing badness but to no avail.

Blizzard is working on solving the problem with SC and D2 which started cropping up in the more recent OS X releases such as 10.5.3, which removed 256-color capability from the drivers.

Some users have been able to use Pacifist to force-install the graphic drivers from the "Leopard Graphics Update 1.0" and restore gameplay. We will continue to work on getting a patch out, however, please be aware that making driver modifications to your system is at your own risk.

I'm not getting my hopes up. It will probably require more graphics power than the MacBook or Mac mini can handle.

Nevermind I've got 4GB of RAM and 320GB of hard drive space with one of their latest CPUs. Nope. It's going to ask for a monster video card that isn't in half the Apple hardware. MacBook users probably need not apply.

Of course, if they're smart they'll support consoles too. I don't have to worry about my Xbox 360's video card when I buy a new game. To borrow a phrase: "It just works."

Zerocorpse, have you played a Blizzard game before?

I'm with Arjun on this one. Blizzard has a history of scaling their games down quite well even when it means they cannot go overboard with high end new hardware.

It is a smart move, really. When you consider how many cheapo computers are out there verse the hardcore gamer computers.

It might not run on Intel GMA chips very well, but I bet it'll still run!

Heck with the game, expand that trailer into a full-length movie!

I loved the earlier games, so I'm sure I'll like this one, and the graphics don't look particularly taxing at the moment so I'm hopeful that it will run OK on my MBP. However, I'd buy this just to support continuing development on the Mac.

I can't play StarCraft on Leopard because it says it won't run in Classic :(

I haven't anticipated a game this much since Diablo II came out. I wasted MONTHS learning about it before it's release. Now, years later, in my mid-20s, I'll be doing the exact same thing for this one. I wonder though, what it'll be like, if they'll introduce some MMO-esque crap like WoW or keep it pure. Also: Bill Roper's gone, so we'll see.

Who cares about D2 not working, it's only 10 years old...D3 is coming and I've been waiting for this for so long...I hope it's not far off...the Mac platform has been starved of decent games for a long while. I need a new addiction...

Yeah, this is absolutely fantastic news, 3 cheers for Blizzard! Not only do they fully support the Mac, they actually put care and effort into the Mac version equal to the PC version! We know this won't be a repeat of C&C3, which runs like shit on even the fastest of Macs.

But I agree with some of the others, what are they thinking working on so many things at once? I understand they have to devote attention to WoW at all times, but why start working on Diablo, and according to them at least one unannounced project at the same time?

Dammit I want my Starcraft II! *cries like a baby*

Yup, I think "the" is right.

Maybe if "the" wasn't used in conjunction with the word "always." Some of us remember back when Bungie was THE Mac-first developer, and when the Myth series blew all the other RTS games, including those from Blizzard, out of the water. Marathon FTW!
