TUAW Review: Dymo DiscPainter Part 3

Software (continued)

Likewise, trying to pick the "TUAW Green" for the text on the label, I thoroughly expected to see the standard Apple color picker so I could use the little magnifier tool to go for the green. No such luck. I finally figured out that I could option-click one of the custom colors to make the color picker appear (see below).

The craptastic Discus for Dymo text color picker

Fortunately, other CD/DVD labeling packages support the DiscPainter. I highly recommend trashing Discus for Dymo and purchasing BeLight's Disc Cover ($34.95). If you can get Avery's free Design Pro software to work with the DiscPainter, please leave a comment and let the rest of us know how to do it.

Hardware and Printing

Clicking the Print button in Discus brought up the standard Mac OS X print dialog with the DiscPainter pre-selected. I used all of the defaults and then watched as the blank CD was pulled into the tall part of the printer and slowly started inching out. It's cool to watch the printing, which occurs from the hub of the CD outwards. The colors matched those chosen in the software very closely, and the resolution was very nice (600 dpi). It took about two minutes for the printing to complete.

A DiscPainter with a slot-loader would make the footprint of the printer half the size of the current DiscPainter. One other gripe -- there's no power button to turn the printer off. You need to unplug it to totally power down.

Really annoying that you guys chose to split this review over 4 pages. FOUR PAGES? Come on.

Also, you say it's a single ink cartridge. How much are the replacements? Maybe I just missed that part of the review while being thoroughly annoyed at having to click to the next page every 2 paragraphs.

I too gave up reading up reading halfway. It's one thing if you have 10,000 words and break it up but CLEARLY you can fit more than two paragraphs on a webpage. This new policy is annoying and probably the LAST review I read if this keeps up ... plus, you mock the UI of the CD software but that NEXT button - what Windows 3.1 disc did you dig that out of?

I gave up reading this halfway through. Is there any reason (apart from trying to force more ads into our already over-saturated eyeballs, of course) that this review is split into so many parts when there's NO ACTUAL LIMIT on the length of a webpage?

Please include a "see whole review" link in future, if only for people who want to print the thing...

Definitely ad money, all the vitriol and hatred is going in the page for part one though, it seems. The part four people seem to be going "ugh if you're doing page make it so i don't have to scroll, it's pointless to do scrolling AND pages". One guy knows about the fact it's for ad money, but for now most of the comments are going on part one.

I wrote this for Part 1 of the 4 part (same day) review, and I'm pasting it into every other part's page just so it gets seen...

Are your corporate overlords now forcing you to write multiple page reviews when this incredibly short 4 parter would have easily fitted on one page? The screenshot app from barely over a month ago is at least 2 or 3 times as long as all these 4 pages combined.

I am really disappointed with this move and do believe it will be the end of TUAW, as well as the rest of Weblogs Inc. if it catches on.
