Macworld: iPod touch gets January apps with 2.0 update

Macworld's Christopher Breen speculates that Mail, Stocks, Maps, Weather and Notes will be available for older iPod touch models as part of the 2.0 update coming on July 11. The apps are no longer available via the January Software Upgrade through iTunes. (Try clicking the link on this page to see what happens: nada.)

If you recall, The Stevinator said during the WWDC keynote that the 2.0 update will be available to iPod touch users for $9.99: half the cost of the January Software Upgrade that brought those apps (officially) to the iPod touch.

This move is sure to perturb the users who already bought the apps, who could be nearly $30 in the hole for something that will cost others (me, for example) a slim Hamilton.

I can think of a worse situation for iPod touch owners: Apple offering the apps individually via the app store, at some undetermined cost for each one. I have no reason at all to believe that will happen, and I really hope that it won't.

Update: Speculation alert! Christopher Breen (himself!) said in comments that his source for this information is a little shakier than he thought. He's updated the original article, and this post's been placed in the Rumors category. So add a few more grains o' salt to this one.

Aren't we supposed to get software updates for free .. its unfair for being charged each time .. I already paid $20 in Jan.. I should have jail-broken it... what's the point of paying when Apple is giving you the shaft yet again! Next windows and Mac OS X will start a subscription service for their security updates (HA!).

If you buy a new iTouch after the 2.0 update is released, then yes, you'll get everything. It was the same way after the Jan update.

We'll see on the 11th.

If this happens to be true, then I can only say that at least we didn't pay $200 for being iPhone early adopters :-P .

i lost the january upgrade after a clean install. I sent a polite mail to the customer service of the iTs who allowed nicely to redownload the lost apps. Maybe their policy has changed since...

I was told by an Apple Store employee that the 2.0 firmware WILL NOT include the January update, but who knows if he was just speculating or had been told by Apple

I'm not angry, I did hours of email and google maps on my iTouch since January. I thought it was well-worth it, and if you told me in January that they would come out cheaper in July, I still would have bought the January upgrade anyway.

Whu-oh, look what I started.

As Robert said — but was clearly unclear in the story (mea culpa) — this was speculation on my part. Regrettably the sources I used turned out to be less solid that I originally thought. I've since edited the entry to make its speculative nature clear and apologize for raising anyone's blood pressure unnecessarily.
