The iPod Gramophone
I like my iPod as much as the next guy (as long as I'm not standing next to Chris Breen, that is. He REALLY likes his iPod, a little too much if you ask me) but I've often found the device not to be 'Olde Timey' enough for me. Thank goodness the thoughtful people at Hammacher Schlemmer are selling The iPod Gramophone for a little less than $500.The iPod Gramophone isn't a fancy set of speakers (we have no need for your woofers nor your tweeters here), but rather a horn to the bottom of which you attach your iPod headphones. Through the power of 'authentic horn acoustics' whatever your iPod is playing can be amplified to up to 55 decibels louder, not to mention the exponential increase in your steampunk street cred.
I don't know about you, but I would like to see more accessories making use of authentic horn acoustics.

It looks a lot like a toilet.

Do a Google image search for "gramophone horn" to see dozens of more elegant designs: flowers, art deco, delicate subtlety, brass craftsmanship, no plastic extrusions wrapped around a bakelite makeup box sitting on a step-stool.

And $500?? Spend another $100 to buy a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin.
Great idea, ugly design (to me, at least). For one, the base looks like one of those footstools. And all white? They should at least spend some money on a decent designer! Still, the idea is good.
July 02 2008 at 9:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi love it, too -- now i'm hoping some ingenious steampunker at intructables.com tells us how to roll our own one of these for, say, less than about $30... because that's the only way i'm going to be using one of these. sigh.
