OSXBMC becomes Plex
A while back the team behind the Xbox Media Center on OS X (which we covered a while back) announced that they were forking the Mac version from the main trunk. Now they've decided that the Mac version will be getting a new name: Plex (as in 'cineplex' or 'googleplex'). For those of you haven't tried it yet, basically Plex is a Front Row replacement media center application that grew out of the long developed XBMC (originally developed for the first Xbox). The lastest available version is 0.5.0b10 (which still hasn't been rebranded) and is a free download. In addition there is a great new skin for XBMC called Aeon, which works with Plex and frankly looks amazingly slick.

Vision 2 Skin is my favorite so far. You can see it and others on the Forum Skins update page: http://forums.osxbmc.com/index.php?showtopic=312&hl=Skins

How do you install the Aeon skin for OSXBMC?

To install skins, put it in the:
user/Application Support/XBMC/skins folder
Then launch the application and select it in the Appearance options.

Plex is cool but should recognise the default media directories in osx without configration. oh and as far as i can tell the latest version of Aeon id NOT compatable with the latest Plex (xbmc).

skins go in ~/Library/Application Support/XBMC/skin
There are several compatible skins on the plex forum site. I have Aeon, a version downloaded a couple weeks ago.

I bought an appleTV, hacked it with a patchstick - result : garbage. (Erratic SSH, no USB drive support, too few media controls etc etc)
My XBOX has been an awesome media centre for several years (thanks to XBMC!), I'll be ebaying the appleTV.
If they ever get XBMC (or PLEX) running on an ATV, I'll reconsider (I could even live without the iTunes sync).
In the meantime, a Mac Mini seems like the way to go (although a new updated version would be nice).

Best of luck to the Plex team-sounds like they took the best option available to them by forking at this time. Look forward to what they do next!
And check out the comments section on that blog entry-yikes :p

the funny thing is that 'googLEplex' has supplanted 'googOLplex' in our lexicon.

Wow...been searching for a frontrow replacement for my mini for some time now. Even with perian, it doesn't want to handle HD content very well, even on local disks. Forget about HD content on a remote AFP share. I used XBMC on an xbox pre-HDTV and loved it. For some reason, it just handles caching so much better and remote HD content works beautifully. Cheers Plex team!

i've been trying out plex and i must say, it massively sucks compared to front row's simplistic elegance. it kills front row in terms of features, but falls on its ass when it comes to usability. fyi :/
