Confirmed: iPod touch 2.0 software to include 'January Upgrade'
In an update to their knowledge base article about the subject this morning, Apple has confirmed that the 2.0 firmware will include Mail, Stocks, Maps, Weather and Notes.
There had been some speculation about this earlier this month.
Also -- when it's available, Apple said the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod Touch will be available at http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/appstore. Currently, the page points to the same "coming soon" page that we've come to know and love, but I'm sure checking back often wouldn't hurt.
Apple also confirmed, as you might imagine, that the January Software Upgrade itself is now no longer available. iPod models shipped after January 15 included the upgrade, while models shipped before did not. Users of those earlier models had to pay $20 for the suite of five apps.

Does this mean that people who now want these apps on their iPod Touch now pay $9.95 and they not only get these, but the new app store, whereas the people who forked over the $20 for just the January apps have to shell out even more for the app store functionality?

To get your apps back: have your iPod sync to a playlist automatically (I assume you are manually managing your music) - I would recommend creating one with just one song in it, to speed things up. Then, sync your iPod. Your apps should be back. Now change your iPod back to manual and you're all set.
**The problem lies in how iTunes manages the device; apparently the apps are considered part of the automatic process, and thus don't get synced if in manual mode after you do a restore.***

Same thing just happened to me, perfect timing!

actually... everything syncs automatically cuz i have like no songs or anything... just wondering... is there a way to fix that? not that it really matters i can wait a few hours (or less... or more???)

Those bastards. I'm definitely going to call and bitch about this. That's absurd. For "accounting purposes", to get the old apps legally they had to charge you $20. But now, you can get the apps, and all this other stuff for only $10? That's insane.

The people in January, however got something that people who are buying the bundle tomorrow will not get.
They got to use the applications from January-July 11th.
Stop complaining and get over it.

Early adopter fee; we all know it exists, and I totally agree that people shouldn't complain about it (at least that much). I paid the $20, and I've been using the apps every since then. Just learn to deal, I guess.

Well now that its free, I guess i can Download the 2.0 Software thats on this site!

Nope, neither is it free nor does it work, already tried it, it gave me an error and nuked my iPod, so now I had to restore it. If you don't wanna lose like an hour that it'll take to get all the songs back up, I wouldn't recommend it. On the other side, you'll have to do it anyways once the real 2.0 ships.
What bothers me most about this, I bought a friggin MP3 player for 399 bucks, had to pay 20 bucks to get something that should have been there in the first place (especially lyrics support) and now have to pay another 10 bucks again for stuff that should have been there in the first place, like the radio remote support. Alright, nobody's forcing me to pay, but I like having lyrics and I also like not having to get the whole iPod out of my pocket to skip a song. But why do I have to pay 339 bucks total when I bought it in September when it came out, and someone who buys the same device now has to pay 30 bucks less and gets the exact same thing? 10 bucks don't hurt, it's just the rationale that pisses me off

So will the new ipod touches, ones that will ship in august, have the 2.0 installed?

This is basically Apple saying that they should never have charged for those apps in the first place, but they were greedy. Ya know Apple, sometimes you really stink on ice.

It's actually not whining, friend, it's saying "enough is enough" for all the money grabbing. It's the principle. If you're ready to roll over and give your money to whoever asks for it, you're the sucker. Stand up for something. Right is right, and wrong is just wrong.
totoro said 10:39PM on 7-12-2008
Exactly. Right is right. You bought an iPod Touch for the price it was advertised, for the features that were advertised for that price. You bought it for the features it had, not the features it might have later, right? Who the hell buys something for "future features not promised for free later on"?
If you didn't think the features you paid for were worth it, you shouldn't have bought one. If you did think it was worth it, you shouldn't be whining now. That is the real principle here.
Thomas said 11:38AM on 7-10-2008
Did you honestly not expect this? This is why I never even bought the 5 apps to begin with. I knew i'd be getting them for free with new update with even more stuff, or for free in general. Apple didn't do anything wrong at all... its like giving a price drop and having everyone that year complain. Its nothing new - these things always happen.
Apple could have made it a lot worse. They could have had the update for $10 and make us pay $3 for each of those apps on the app store. That would have frustrated me. But really, I would have only bought the map application anyway. Which is why the January update wasn't worth $20 for me.
