First Look: NYTimes
If there was one application on the App Store that I wanted to love it was the NYTimes app (iTunes link). I've mentioned before that I'm a big fan of the New York Times and that's why it is so disappointing to me that I can't recommend this app. The New York Times mobile site is great on the iPhone, and this appliction is not. I tested it via WiFi on my first gen iPhone and it was slow, images didn't load, and advertisements took up a good portion of the screen from time to time. The search function is nice, but it isn't reason enough to waste your time on this one. Stick with the Mobile version of the Times' website and save some space on your iPhone.
Check out this gallery for lots of screenshots.

I could not agree with you more. This was the first app that I downloaded (before Remote.app even!) and I find it so disappointing that the NYT tech crew failed so abjectly. With bars and ads, the readable screen is cut in half, the response is sluggish, some stories load seemingly at random, the graphics fail half of the time, etc.
For shame.

From what I understand about the application, the point is to wait and sync the application up so that you can read it without using the web; maybe your behavior and their expected behavior are different?

The political bias of the NY Times is maddening, and part of the reason the paper is losing money, but I do like a few of their op-ed writers.

I hope you marked it down in the App Store?

I actually like the application a lot. The ad doesn't bug me so much, and it's a lot easier to navigate than my local paper's full Web site. I realize it's not the full NY Times site and I'm okay with that. For what we got, I'm actually very impressed and actually spent time perusing articles yesterday.

Unless you got on of those 8mb iPhones 0.2mb won't use up much space at all ;).

Disappointing and slooooooow. I was looking forward to seeing this, too, but this looks off the mark... imo, there's no reason to try and make an app for a news site, or try to reinvent the way the web works...
IHT.com just launched an iPhone-optimized site ( http://iphone.iht.com ) instead of an app, which makes way more sense in the case of accessing what's already online. MUCH faster... just the way I like my news. http://blogs.iht.com/tribtalk/technology/lab/?p=20

Great link to the IHT optimized site! Just as you said, it's fast and it looks great, too. Thanks!

I think this is a good app. the price is right. I didn't actually expect to see it so I am happy.
I think it would be cool if it would cache more of the newspaper at once. So if I log in on wifi, then I am on Bart later away from a signal I can keep reading. I think that would be amazing.
It has a lot of potential.

The Mobile News Network app from the Associated Press is really nice. I read the Times web site regularly, and most of their breaking news is coming from the Associated Press any way.

There is an update for the NYTimes app this morning. [Might have to remove it from your iPhone first and then reinstall it..the "update" didn't install correctly for me]
