iPod touch 2.0 update now for sale, for real

Blessed are the patient, for they shall pay $9.95 (or $10.79, with sales tax depending on your billing address) and download the iPod touch 2.0 Software Update (store link), and yea they shall wait some 20 to 30 minutes for the 226 MB of new firmware to descend from the high Akamai and bestow App Store access upon them. In point of fact, also blessed are the impatient who remained awake and clicked the "Upgrade" button every five minutes up until 12 am ET, which is about when everything started to get moving.

Downloading it now, gallery below, first impressions to come. We have a warning from reader Paul that his upgrade to 2.0 (on an iPhone first-gen, not a touch) nuked his Address Book data, so be sure to back up before you upgrade your devices. We also have a tip from Cody that Canadian would-be buyers of the 2.0 update and App Store goodies must use a credit card; iTunes gift cards are not working to place the order.

Note that there is a new SLA accompanying this upgrade, as one might expect (PDF here). If you're hungry for more as you wait for your upgrade to download and run, you can browse the list of iPod touch-compatible apps or check out our First Looks so far.

Update:
Installed, resynced and bought some apps -- all working as expected except for Mail, which is hanging on start and kicking back to the main screen. Going to try wiping it down and resyncing if I can. A note to the commenters who are suggesting pulling a torrent of the new firmware instead of coughing up the $10... c'mon, are you going to risk your $300 iPod's health on a pirated software update? It's $10. Give up cigarettes or something.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

after i installed 2.0 on my ipod, i noticed that the touch screen response is much smoother and faster now... better than before... but one problem though... the battery seems to drain faster. and the ipod is very hot after a few hours of usage... anyone has this problem?? =]

Went to the iTunes store (Spain), purchased the update...and was met by a "Thank you" screen that instructed me to click on some 'Download and upgrade' button that was nowhere to be seen. The only two buttons on this page are 'Finish' (takes you back to the store), and a 60-day free Mobile Me trial, which takes you to http://www.me.com/not_found/

So much for paying for something and not getting it, I guess I will head over to the 'bay and see what I can find.

i have a jailbroken 16 gb ipod touch running 1.1.4.

i'm pretty interested in reverting back to officialdom and upgrading to iphone 2.0.

i'm nervous about doing this, though, because of the jailbreak that's currently in place. can anyone point me toward instructions on how to revert my ipod back to it's unjailbroken state?

Hey Brandon,

I was having the same problem. I have two routers at home since I have too many wired computers. One is set as a router with DHCP on and the other as a switch with DHCP off. All computers and Apple TV are on the router. The switch holds network storage devices and a networked printer. Both have wireless enabled, and both get IPs assigned from the router.

When I had the iPod connected to the WLAN on the switch, Remote didn't want to work no matter what. The PIN wouldn't authenticate. However, everything worked as advertised when I connected the iPod to the WLAN on the router.

I don't know what your network setup is at you place. If it is like mine, I hope my experience will help you.

I updated the firmware on my Touch on Friday night around 9PM eastern. It didn't ask me for a payment and my card didn't get charged. I got the Touch when it came out in September '07, and paid for the January update. I do not know if that affected my purchase.

After the update and restore were completed, Mail didn't work at all. It did not even accept changes made in Settings. I had to reflash the firmware and start off with a virgin iPod to get things going again.

Nights: "There will ALWAYS be those "mainstream" people who pay for songs, buy albums, and buy firmware upgrades. But for those of us who are students going to college WHO CANNOT afford ANYTHING, piracy seems ok to me."

Oh my God. I fear for the future.

Do you steal meals at the caf? Or books from the bookstore?

Cut back on something. Like maybe the WEED YOU ARE SMOKING.

And get the hell off my lawn.

I couldn't wait. I gave Apple till 4pm yesterday to get there act together. DL from a demon and everythings working better than beforev no regrets here. I would have gladly paid the $10 if I didn't have to wait so long.

Apple wouldn't take my money. I bought $25 card last week, redeemed and waiting for the upgrade. Can't use store credits to buy upgrade. So then went on discussion boards to be abused for not having (or wanting to have) a credit card. Wanted to pay, willing to wait, but no alternative but to grab the torrent, which worked fine. Now what pisses me off is, can't buy apps with the credit either. Makes me want to return the touch which was almost $600 canadian when i can't download 99 cent apps for it. STUPID.

Problems with the update, it won't download! Purchased it, iTunes started, it said to connect the iTouch and hit download and install, the only button was "Done". Sat there forever and nothing happened. Hit Done and was returned to main iTunes store screen. Went through the Buy process again, it said that I already bought it, yeah, and asked if I wanted to download it again for free, clicked Yes, repeated the process with no download. :-(
