Mac OS X Update for MobileMe 1.1

We all know how rocky the transition from .Mac to MobileMe has been. It now seems to be working for quite a few folks (at least to some degree), and Apple has already pushed out an update for the service. The Mac OS X Update for MobileMe 1.1 is available now through Software Update. Note that if you aren't yet seeing the update, try signing out of .Mac via System Preferences and then back in again -- you should see a dialog asking you if you want to download the update.

As per usual, the notes are sparse, but it is recommended for users of 10.5.4 and "includes general system fixes that enhance your Mac for MobileMe." Let us know if it improves things for you.

Does anybody know what AOS 1.0 is? It downloaded at the same time as the MM 1.1 update did, though I had to check the log to see it - it didn't show that it was updating it at that time. Any ideas?

I have not seen MobileMe in SU yet. But I do have conflict between what sys pref panel for .mac says is my password, and what keychain says. I have no idea what the pswrd in sys preys is (it's longer tho), keychain will get . Mac mail on iPhone. Entire mailapp is a wash for me re. Mac, thousands of spans, I have ignored address for years as spam magnet from days I had cable ISP

Here's a news flash for you: Apple is dropping the homepage function that has been part of .Mac. And they are doing this in mid-October. While Apple has announced that bookmarks and iCards were going away, the company has been quiet, and almost sneaky about homepage. My wife found this announcement buried six clicks deep in an obscure part of the Apple support site.

So think of this: If you have a homepage-generated site, it will get nuked in mid-October. On top of that, some features we have come to know and love in homepage have no equivalents in me.com.

Here's an important example: if you post files in a public folder on your iDisk, until now, you could password-protect a folder, so that one client could not pry into another client's folder. In me.com, THIS IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE.

Another example: using the Gallery function of me.com is not that bad. But in homepage, you could have password protected sites to protect what you were presenting. If you are a designer, that is VERY important. In the me.com Gallery, this is not possible.

Also, while the me.com Gallery allows for thumbnails and some pretty nifty features for letting someone view a larger version of the image, DO NOT try to upload a .jpg version, as Gallery does some pretty serious on-the-fly image compression. The result is that some images are badly artifacted. My advice: save the files as .png format files, as this is a lossless format. Yes, .png does work with me.com Gallery.

My wife has used .Mac homepage as a key component of her business. She is a textile designer, and uses homepage to place her designs online for her clients to view. Although Gallery does some pretty nice things, the lack of password protection in either Gallery or iDisk puts the security and privacy of her designs at risk. She has depended on Mac.com for her business, and now she is screwed.

In addition, me.com BREAKS iWEB. You can view thumbnails, but you can't view full-size images. And that's just one example. A number of other features are broken.

If Steve Jobs has not already done so, there are some arrogant middle managers at Apple who need to be fired. To roll out me.com without a parity of features that professional users have come to need is arrogant in the least. Burying the announcement that .Mac homepage, and countless thousands of Web sites created with it, are going to be nuked arbitrarily in October, with no easy way to move them over to me.com is a complete breach of the implied contract that Apple has with its .Mac customers.

Look, Apple is my favorite company. I have been a loyal customer since 1978. I'll admit that I am a fanboy. But what saddens me is that in its effort to win new customers, Apple has forgotten the people who have stood by the company through thick and thin. My hunch is that a bunch of arrogant MBA middle managers inside Apple decided to pull this stunt. To bury the announcement that homepage is going away, and to not be up-front about it is simply duplicious. They know that thousands, if not millions of .Mac customers will be furious, but rather than be open about it, they buried this important announcement.

We should expect more from Apple. When John Scully ran the company, it was almost ruined by a wave of arrogant MBAs who subverted the company from its original ideals. I hope this is not happening again.

If you feel the same way, we must make our opinions heard. We must hold Apple accountable to make sure that the transition from .Mac to me.com is handled better than this.

I bought MobileMe at the Apple Store on the same day as I bought iPhone 3G from Rogers (July 11). MobileMe worked straight out of the box - but I did sign up online on the *evening* of Friday because I'd spent much of the day waiting in line to buy and activate the 3G!

MobileMe is working flawlessly for me. I was pleasantly surprised by the speed of syncing email/calendar/address book/etc changes to the cloud and back.

I don't know what else this system update did, but it made my system preferences tab go from ".mac" to "mobile me".

I got the update, followed the instructions to enable push calendar, contacts, mail and it all executed flawlessly. Calendar refreshed immediately, but there was a slight delay in the contacts loading on my 1st gen iPhone (but I do have over 1500).

I just received my first push .me email.

and BTW, The me.com website is beautiful. I was incredibly impressed at how clean it is and how much it feels like a desktop application.

Can anyone tell me how often the sync should be set in System Prefs. "Automatically", or every 15 mins, or what?
