Ask TUAW: DJ software, concatenated RAIDs, Migration Assistant, Remote Desktop Connection and more

This time in Ask TUAW we're looking at DJ software, catenated RAIDs, Spaces, Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Client, tab options in Safari, Spaces, and more.

As always, your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of Mac OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!

Howard asks.

is there any way to mimic turntables with my mackbook without buying cd turntables or the like? I would just like to control most everything through my mac but have the full functionality to make my own mixes and to beat match. What would be good to get for this?

Is there a program that would work with an external piece of hardware for crossfading and pitch adjustment?

This is one area in which I have no personal experience. Looking around a bit, however, I found quite a few applications for DJ-ing on a Mac. It's a couple of years old, but you might start with this overview at Ars Technica. His recommendation was TRAKTOR DJ Studio which just happens to be 50% off right now for $119. TRAKTOR does support external controllers. However, there are many other DJ applications out there, some of which don't appear in the review. If you don't want to pay for TRAKTOR I would have a look at MacUpdate, though I can't really offer any concrete recommendations.

I am running 10.5.3 on a latest gen mac mini. I have my iTunes library sitting on an external firewire 750GB Western Digital Mybook. The external hard drive seems to getting filled up quite fast. I would like to be able to purchase another firewire drive and combine the storage with my existing drive, without losing the data. A RAID0 configuration would not be ideal, as I don't want to stripe the data, just combine the storage. If I go with the Concatenated RAID, will the data be lost during the build? Also, if one drive fails, will I lose all of the data? I would think not, since the data is not striped amongst the drives, but my research has lead me to believe otherwise.

From what I can tell it would probably be a bad idea to set up a concatenated RAID. If you use Disk Utility it will erase the disk contents. There may be a way to do it with the command line diskutil. However, to answer your other question, yes, a concatenated set will completely fail even if only one of the drive fails. My recommendation is not to do it. Your best bet would probably be something like a Drobo; unfortunately they're not cheap (though, the first gen Drobo is on clearance right now for $350).

I would love to switch to Safari if I could get an easy, free way to sync my bookmarks. Hmm, maybe someday.

If you have access to a FTP server you might have a look at SafariDepot as a free Safari sync tool.

Alan asks

I'm finally gonna switch over to Leopard pretty soon. I've got a 500GB external USB drive, which has a clone of my Macbook's drive on it, courtesy of Carbon Copy Cloner. I plan on doing a wipe and install for Leopard, as I've installed a lot of junk on here. My question is, do you have any tips on what applications I should export my data from, to make the clean install easier? I understand that Migration Assistant does not work on external USB drives, only Firewire.

Migration Assistant can read user accounts off of USB drives on Intel Macs. I think that might have been a limitation at one time, but I have successfully used Migration Assistant on a USB drive (containing a SuperDuper! clone).

Caitlin asks

Anyone know a good tool to get Spaces to loop through the first space with the last space? I have three spaces in one column.

The best way to do this is put the three spaces in one row. Then it will loop back if you use the arrow keys.

Stephen asks

Will purchased apps from the App Store be licensed for a single iPhone or for a single iTunes account? My family has 2 phones running on 1 iTunes account, and I was wondering if both of us could use a copy of the same app without having to pay for it twice.

While I have no means for testing this for myself, several folks have reported that applications purchased from the App Store are licensed for the iTunes account and not the individual device. So you can download applications to multiple iPhones linked to the same iTunes account.

Adam asks

Is there a simple program that lets me on my MacBook Pro connect to my Grandfathers Windows XP machine across the country like you can do with iChat Screen Sharing when you have two Macs connected?

Yes, Microsoft offers a free Remote Desktop Connection Client. You can also run VNC, but there's not really much reason to do that.

David asks

How do I set Safari to open new pages in new tabs? That is, where is the equivalent to this feature from Firefox?

Okay, if I understand you correctly you want to force Safari to open all links to open a new tab and not a new window. Check out this hidden feature we posted on a while back.

I have an iPod Touch, I'm running 10.5.4 and I can't access my WiFi from the iPod. I know that I have WiFi in my house because my laptop shows that I have a good connection, but when I try to access it from my iPod, it doesn't recognize that there's a network. Under "Choose a Network...", all it shows is the "Other..." option. I'll click on this and manually enter the name of the network and the securities (none), but it displays the message that it can't find the network. I've tried resetting the iPod, turning my WiFi on and off, etc., etc., but nothing seems to help. I've scoured the Internet looking for solutions to this problem, but everything suggested doesn't seem to yield any good results or the instructions for fixing it are more tailored for the iPhone and requires using options that I don't have. Help!

Is there a 'good' single solution for password stoarage for OS X and Windows? I currently use PasswordSafe which has a OS X friendly Java version, but it hasnt been updated since 2006.

I dont need any sort of syncing, but being able to manualy merge password files would be nice.

I was looking at my iTunes library earlier and I noticed that I have a bunch of songs from a CD that are listed as multiple albums in Cover Flow because different artists sing them. Is there a way that I can compile them into one album so that when I use Cover Flow there is only one album artwork for them all?

Setting the alblum artist field should resolve this issue.

A question for Ask TUAW...

What is the best way to take full advantage of MobileMe across OS X and Windows when already in a Microsoft Exchange environment? Especially for syncing contacts and calendars without creating duplicate entries or events.

Also the iPhone Exchange directory searching only works with contact syncing turned on, then you end up with duplicate contacts.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

I have a mac and a pc on my desk each with their own screen. I'd like to share a wireless mac keyboard and mouse between the two. What is the best way to do this and end up with only one keyboard/mouse on the desk?
Thanks

Running VMWare Fusion, I've run into the VM (XP-SP2) losing it's internet connection quite frequently. I found a solution over in their forums of typing in Terminal the following:

sudo /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/boot.sh --restart

It works like a champ, but I have to fire up Terminal, drag it in from a clipping, enter my password, and wait. Is there a way to do all this in applescript or Automator? I'd really like a simple double-click icon to reset the VM! Is there a way so pass all this, then exit the terminal cleanly?

Thanks!

Here is my AskTUAW question:

I'm using iPhone software 2.0 on the 3G phone. I REALLY want an app that toggles wifi and 3G on-and-off right on the homescreen (as opposed to going in to Settings and navigating through the menu. This prompts 2 questions:

1. Is there somewhere to go to request app development (because I don't have the skills to do it)?

2. Do wifi and 3G (or Edge, for that matter) cancel each other out? Meaning, when Wifi is on, does 3G turn off, or are they both sucking power at the same time?

Thanks!

Good suggestions on the DJ software so far. DJ software and hardware is a very personal choice. What might work great and feel just right to one DJ could be competly wrong for another.

Mimicking turntables is a task that many different pieces of hardware and hardware / software combinations have tried to pull off over the years, each with varying degrees of success. If you are a scratch DJ or a beat juggler you're probably not going to be happy with something less than two real turntables, two CDJs or something similar. If you want to combine that with a software solution for the convenience of instant access to a large collection of MP3, Serato Scratch Live (SSL) is probably the most popular choice. You could also look at Torq from M-Audio.

If you don't want to spend the money on a pair of CDJs or 1200s there are some other pieces of hardware out there that will give you scratch-like performance. Have a look at the forthcoming NS7 from Numark. Or the DN-HS5500CD from Denon. Vestax has a couple MIDI controllers worth checking out as well. The VCi-100 and VCI-300. If your budget is smaller check out the Hercules DJ Console RMX.

Most of the hardware products above offer some way to control a software cossfader. Any MIDI controller with a couple sliders could be used with a piece of software that supports MIDI control (and most DJ apps do) to control the crossfader and pitch controls.

On the software front, I recommend MegaSeg. It's very reliable and if your going to be performing in front of an audience the last thing you want is for your software to be buggy or crash.

As mentioned before, Torq and SSL also run on the Mac. PCDJ Reflex was supposed to be cross-platform from the start but somehow the Mac version got delayed. Virtual DJ and Traktor also run on the Mac.

For all things DJ you might want to check out scratchworx at scratchworx.com. There is a lot of good information there and they are not Windows biased.

Regarding remote desktop, I use www.showmypc.com. It's free, secure, doesn't require any software be installed, and solves the problem of DHCP. Works on mac, windows and linux. I rely on it for supporting all my clients.
